Everyone has their own cherished memories of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, with favorites varying widely among fans. For some, it’s the classic charm of Sonic Heroes, while others may lean towards the darker tones of Shadow the Hedgehog. However, one title that often gets overlooked in discussions of top Sonic games is Sonic and the Black Knight. This unique Wii exclusive transports players to a medieval setting, where Sonic takes on the role of a heroic knight tasked with vanquishing evil. Despite its quirks, it holds a special place in the hearts of many, including myself. Now, thanks to a new mod, this beloved title is making its way to PC.
Project Reforged: A New Dawn for Sonic
Enter Project Reforged, a fan-driven initiative that aims to “reimagine the original” Sonic the Hedgehog game while remaining true to its essence. Developed by the talented ‘Besky,’ this project promises more than just a visual upgrade. It seeks to enhance gameplay by introducing smoother mechanics and modernized systems, all while preserving the spirit of the original Black Knight.
For those who found the original game’s controls a bit cumbersome—especially when it came to swordplay—this is certainly welcome news. The Misty Lake zone, which serves as the tutorial area, is currently available for players to explore, albeit in its alpha stage. Besky has been transparent about the current state of the game, noting that players may encounter “bugs” and some “missing features.” However, the demo offers an exciting glimpse into the future, featuring five stages and two bosses, including a showdown with the iconic King Arthur and a newly crafted battle against Sir Galahad, or as some may recognize, Silver the Hedgehog.
Among the new features is an intriguing parry mechanic, which adds a fresh layer to the gameplay. A brief glimpse of this mechanic can be seen during a warthog charge in the demo trailer. While it may not reach the challenging heights of Dark Souls, it promises to enhance the boss fights, making them more engaging and dynamic.
Hello everyone, the big day has finally arrived for me, and I’m presenting the first alpha demo for Project Reforged. This demo has reached this level thanks to your wonderful feedback so I’m counting on your continued support. Hope you like it 🙂https://t.co/EGmq62HaNx pic.twitter.com/yPUF2WRNvU

Besky’s Sonic and the Black Knight remake mod is currently available in alpha form. While players should expect some bugs and incomplete features, the promise of future levels and enhancements keeps the excitement alive. The mod can be downloaded for free, inviting fans to experience this nostalgic journey once more.
As someone who often dreams of a Sonic Heroes PC port, I find myself reflecting on the impact of Sonic and the Black Knight. It represents a blend of high fantasy—my favorite genre—and a refreshing take on the franchise. I fondly remember the challenges of the Lancelot fight, which tested my skills more than I care to admit. With the inclusion of Galahad and the promise of facing Percival, Lancelot, and Gawain again, I eagerly anticipate diving back into this enchanting world. Black Knight, prepare yourself; I’m ready to take you on once more, and this time, I’m not a mere child.
