PSA: Star Wars Outlaws doesn’t work on Steam Deck (yet), but it’s great on ROG Ally and Legion Go

While the system requirements for Star Wars Outlaws on PC are not excessively demanding, they do surpass those of several recent titles. This raised questions about the game’s performance on handheld gaming devices such as the Steam Deck, Legion Go, and ROG Ally. After extensive testing on these platforms, it appears that the game is primarily functional on the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and Legion Go, with the Steam Deck currently facing multiple issues that hinder gameplay.

For those eager to experience the game on the ROG Ally or Legion Go, some adjustments are necessary to optimize performance. Below are the recommended settings for a smoother gaming experience.

After spending several hours immersed in Star Wars Outlaws on the ROG Ally X and Legion Go, I found that the gameplay can become quite choppy. To mitigate this, it’s advisable to disable ray tracing or set it to the lowest possible level. Additionally, most graphics settings should be minimized. Here are some specific adjustments to consider:

  • Turn on AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF): This feature employs AI to generate extra frames, significantly enhancing the overall frames per second (FPS). For guidance on enabling this, refer to our ROG Ally AFMF guide.
  • Set refresh rate to 120Hz: This steady rate is manageable for the system.
  • Adjust resolution to 900p: While this is a matter of personal preference, lowering the resolution from 1080p can ease the system’s workload. Adjust this within Armoury Crate or Legion Space.

What does Star Wars Outlaws look like on ROG Ally and Legion Go?

Having dedicated over eight hours to Star Wars Outlaws on the ROG Ally X, it’s clear that while the visuals may not rival those of high-end gaming laptops or desktops, they still deliver a commendable experience on these handhelds. Textures are rendered adequately, and pop-in effects are manageable. Although choppiness can occur, it can be alleviated with the right settings.

Currently, Star Wars Outlaws is not available on Steam, which means players must navigate workarounds to install the game via Ubisoft Connect. Attempts to utilize an open-source launcher plugin, Decky Loader, have proven challenging. Despite successfully installing the game, the controller support is lacking, and crashes occur when trying to start the game.

While there may be future fixes for the Steam Deck, the absence of a direct Steam title complicates matters. For those interested in attempting the installation, guides are available for using Decky Loader and installing Ubisoft Connect on the Steam Deck.

Star Wars Outlaws on Steam Deck warning

Players attempting to run Star Wars Outlaws on the Steam Deck will encounter a warning message indicating that the game is installed on a mechanical hard drive, which could lead to performance issues. Although this notice can be bypassed, the game still crashes even at the lowest settings.

Get playing in a galaxy far far away

Since acquiring my Steam Deck, my primary goal has been to enjoy PC games on a handheld device. With the addition of the ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and Legion Go, I find each device serves its purpose well. More often than not, I indulge in gaming sessions in bed before sleep, making for a cozy experience. Among these options, the ROG Ally, especially the AMD Z1 Extreme model, stands out as my preferred choice for playing Star Wars Outlaws. Its superior power and support for VRR make it a more enjoyable experience compared to the Steam Deck and Legion Go.
