Star Trek: Infection VR Unveiled at Gamescom
At this year’s Gamescom, the gaming world was treated to an intriguing announcement: Star Trek: Infection VR, a “narrative survival” game tailored for both Quest 3 and PC VR platforms. Developed by Played With Fire, known for titles like Stargaze and Mixture, and published by Broken Mirror Games, a co-development horror label under the esteemed Bloober Team—creators of Layers of Fear, Blair Witch, and the Silent Hill remakes—this game promises to deliver a unique experience in the Star Trek universe.
While the Star Trek franchise has faced its share of criticism due to recent television shows and films, the introduction of a survival genre within this beloved universe comes as a surprise. In Star Trek: Infection VR, players will step into the role of a Vulcan Starfleet officer embarking on a covert mission aboard the USS Lumen, where the narrative quickly descends into a psychological and physical nightmare.
“The ship is empty. The crew is missing. But something sentient and sinister has taken hold of everything, and now… it’s inside your body too. Mutating you physically and unlocking dangerous new abilities at the cost of your renowned Vulcan mind and composure. Explore the USS Lumen. Fight or embrace the infection. And confront the darkness within the ship… and yourself.”
Equipped with a tricorder and a phaser, players will have the freedom to choose between stealth and force as they navigate the eerie corridors of the USS Lumen. The game also allows for a hands-on crafting experience, where players can utilize tools and workstations to create items and gadgets, enhancing the immersive experience.
This title marks the second playable Star Trek VR game available for home use, and notably, it is the only one currently accessible for Quest users. The first, Ubisoft’s Star Trek: Bridge Crew, launched back in 2017 for PC VR and the original PlayStation VR, later making its way to the original Oculus Quest in 2019. Unfortunately, it was delisted from the Quest Store in 2022, leaving a gap in the VR offerings for Star Trek enthusiasts.
Star Trek: Infection VR is slated for release later this year, with an initial launch on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, followed by a PC VR debut on Steam shortly thereafter. Interested players can now wishlist the game on the Meta Horizon Store, eagerly anticipating this innovative addition to the Star Trek legacy.
