Game Console R36 Max 2 Teased with Larger Display and New Layout

Game Boy-style vertical handhelds are gaining popularity, with premium options like the ANBERNIC RG 477V and AYANEO Pocket VERT leading the pack. However, for those looking for a more budget-friendly option, a new contender is on the horizon.

A recent post on X by Retro Gaming With Deadfred hinted at the upcoming Game Console R36 Max 2. The teaser highlighted improvements over the original R36 Max, including enhanced sticks and a larger display, while retaining the Rockchip RK3326 chipset from the previous model.

The original R36 Max, released last year as a sub- handheld, featured a 4-inch IPS screen with a square 1:1 aspect ratio at 720 x 720 resolution. Powered by the RK3326 chipset, known for its use in ultra-budget retro consoles, the device offered decent performance for 8- or 16-bit gaming and light emulation.

The R36 Max 2 appears to be a refresh rather than a complete redesign. The screen size has been increased to 4.5 inches, now with a more traditional 4:3 aspect ratio and a 1,024 x 768 resolution. The D-pad and left joystick have also been repositioned, with the joystick replaced by a more arcade-style version.

While there have been no changes to the internal hardware, with the RK3326 chipset remaining unchanged, this is not surprising given the device’s focus on affordability over raw power.

Details regarding pricing and availability are still unknown, but considering the budget-friendly nature of the original R36 Max, it is unlikely to compete with higher-end vertical handhelds. With leaked retail-style images already circulating, it is only a matter of time before the Game Console R36 Max 2 hits the market.
