Xbox 360 Games Are Reportedly Coming To PC As Well

Microsoft is poised to make significant strides in the gaming landscape, echoing Sony’s recent moves towards an all-digital future. The tech giant appears to be laying the groundwork for a seamless integration of Xbox 360 games onto PC platforms, alongside titles from its original console. This initiative is expected to enhance the gaming experience for users who have long cherished their physical game collections.

Expanding the Xbox Ecosystem

According to reports from The Verge, Microsoft has shared a document with developers outlining plans for backward compatibility of Xbox 360 games on the forthcoming Project Helix console. This console is designed to support both PC and handheld gaming systems, allowing developers the flexibility to opt into this compatibility feature.

Developers will have the autonomy to set their own pricing for the PC versions of their games, with the option to include them in the popular Game Pass subscription service. This move is anticipated to foster a vibrant marketplace where players can enjoy their favorite titles across the entire Xbox ecosystem, thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere support. As Microsoft gradually rolls out this program over the next few years, gamers can look forward to a more interconnected gaming experience.

Building on Previous Initiatives

This initiative builds upon Microsoft’s earlier announcement regarding the introduction of original Xbox games to PC, which was unveiled last month with an initial selection of four titles. The expansion of this program is expected to take place in October, coinciding with the anticipated launch of achievements for original Xbox games, further enriching the gaming experience.

In a recent development, data miners uncovered intriguing information within the files of the newly released Xbox games for PC. As reported by Tom’s Hardware, Microsoft has included an official emulator, known as Xe03 or Fission, which facilitates the running of Xbox 360 games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Additionally, this emulator houses another tool, XeFu or Fusion, enabling the emulation of original Xbox games on modern consoles and PCs.

Disc-to-Digital Program on the Horizon

In tandem with these advancements, Microsoft is reportedly gearing up to launch a disc-to-digital program that would allow players to convert their physical game copies into digital versions. This initiative, designed to ensure continued access to games for those with physical discs, was initially slated for a public beta for Xbox Insiders in July, but has faced delays. While details remain sparse, it’s uncertain whether this system will include a disc drive or if Microsoft plans to follow in the footsteps of PlayStation by phasing out physical game discs entirely.

As Microsoft navigates this evolving landscape, the gaming community watches closely, eager to see how these developments will shape the future of gaming on both console and PC platforms.
