Jack Dorsey, the visionary behind Twitter, has introduced a noteworthy enhancement to his offline messaging application, BitChat. This new feature allows Android users to seamlessly share and install the app directly from one device to another, circumventing the need for an internet connection, the Google Play Store, or GitHub. The announcement was made through the social media platform X.
APK File Will Be Shared via Bluetooth
- Old Method: Previously, users were required to download the APK file from GitHub or other online sources to access BitChat.
- New Method: Now, users who have BitChat installed can effortlessly share the APK file with other Android devices using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.
- Installation Without Internet: Recipients of the file can install the app without needing an internet connection or visiting the Google Play Store.
- Available for Android: This offline sharing feature is currently exclusive to Android devices.
This update arrives in the wake of the Indian government’s request to block BitChat from GitHub, citing concerns that the app could be exploited by criminal organizations, potentially obstructing legal investigations. The app gained attention when it was utilized by Gen-Z participants during a demonstration organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in New Delhi.
Ban on Online Platforms Will Also Have No Effect
The BitChat team has emphasized that the app can now “send itself to another Android phone without internet.” This innovation ensures that even if the app faces restrictions or removal from online platforms such as GitHub or Google Play Store, users can continue to access it by sharing it among themselves. Consequently, every Android device with BitChat installed transforms into a potential distribution hub for the application.
What are GitHub, BLE Mesh Network and APK?
- Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Mesh Network: This technology enables multiple nearby Bluetooth devices to interconnect, forming a mesh network. It operates independently of a central router or tower, allowing data and messages to traverse from one device to another without requiring internet access.
- Android Application Package (APK): This file format is specific to the Android operating system, akin to the ‘.exe’ file used for software installation on Windows computers. The ‘.apk’ file facilitates direct app installation on Android devices without the Play Store.
- GitHub: Recognized as the world’s largest software development and code hosting platform, GitHub serves as a collaborative space where developers share applications, software code, and files (such as APKs). When an app is unavailable on the Play Store, developers often host it on GitHub’s repository.
