Kakao is embarking on a transformative journey by integrating OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, directly into its flagship messenger application, KakaoTalk. This strategic move, revealed during the company’s annual developers conference, signifies one of the most substantial upgrades in the app’s history, as Kakao aims to evolve KakaoTalk into a multifunctional “super app” powered by artificial intelligence.
Seamless Integration and User Experience
Beginning in October, users will find ChatGPT readily accessible within the KakaoTalk chat tab, eliminating the need for a separate app download. This dedicated tab will not only facilitate direct interaction with ChatGPT but will also allow users to engage with a variety of Kakao ecosystem services, including reservations, gifting, and music streaming via Melon, all within the conversational flow of the app.
CEO Chung Shin-a emphasized the significance of this integration, stating, “By bringing ChatGPT into KakaoTalk, an app that nearly all Koreans use every day, we are embedding world-class AI into the lives of people across the nation.” He highlighted that Kakao’s services extend well beyond messaging, aiming to combine global technology with local expertise to create experiences that are both natural and trusted.
A New Era of Digital Strategy
This AI initiative is part of a broader digital strategy overhaul aimed at enhancing user engagement and creating new monetization opportunities. Despite boasting approximately 49.1 million monthly active users, KakaoTalk has experienced a decline in user engagement, with average monthly time spent per user dropping significantly in recent years. Industry insiders suggest that while KakaoTalk remains a beloved app, its dominance is increasingly challenged by competitors like YouTube and Instagram.
As the integration of generative AI is viewed as a potential game-changer, Kakao aims to leverage AI agents to deliver personalized experiences and targeted advertisements seamlessly. This approach not only enhances user convenience but also enables Kakao to gather valuable behavioral data, reinforcing its competitive edge in the global AI landscape.

Lee Jun-ho, an analyst at Hana Securities, noted that while the integration of ChatGPT is a significant step, it may not be sufficient to reverse declining engagement trends. “To capture broader, purpose-agnostic traffic, Kakao must deliver AI experiences that go beyond messaging and feel genuinely innovative,” he remarked.
