Tech giant Kakao is embarking on a transformative journey with its flagship messenger service, KakaoTalk, marking its first significant update since the platform’s inception 15 years ago. The company has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT and its proprietary AI model, Kanana, into the messaging app, alongside enhancements in personalization and communication capabilities.
Innovative Features Unveiled
During the annual if(Kakao)25 conference held at the Kakao AI Campus in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the updates were presented as part of Kakao’s strategic vision for the next 15 years. CEO Chung Shin-a emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience, stating, “This renewal reflects KakaoTalk’s dedication to listening to users’ voices and adapting to the evolving landscape.”
The centerpiece of this update is the introduction of ChatGPT, powered by OpenAI’s GPT-5, which will be available next month. This integration allows users to access a sophisticated AI conversational tool directly within KakaoTalk, featuring a dedicated tab that connects seamlessly to Kakao’s services, including Kakao Map, Gift, and Melon, without the need to switch applications.
Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s international managing director, remarked on the significance of this collaboration, noting, “This gathering is a celebration of just how far AI has already come in Korea and a reminder of how much more we can achieve when technology and imagination move forward together.” He expressed optimism about the potential for further integrations across Kakao’s platforms.
Introducing Kanana
Kakao’s in-house AI, Kanana, is set to debut following a closed beta test next month. This feature will leverage Kanana Nano, a lightweight model tailored for the Korean language, to provide real-time conversational assistance, automatic summarization, and advanced multimodal search capabilities. Chung highlighted that Kanana will proactively identify and recommend important tasks and information, enhancing user convenience while prioritizing privacy, as it operates solely within the app.
Revamped User Interface
The KakaoTalk interface is also undergoing a significant redesign, incorporating user feedback to enhance usability. The friends tab will transition to a feed-style layout, enabling users to share updates, photos, and stories, thereby fostering deeper social connections. Additionally, users can customize their friends list to manage access to their feeds.
To streamline communication, users can now create up to 10 custom chat folders, each capable of holding 100 chatrooms, facilitating the organization of personal, professional, and group conversations. The unread folder will feature message previews and AI-generated summaries for efficient access to critical updates.
Other notable features include the ability to record voice chats with AI-generated written summaries and the option to edit sent messages. The open chatroom feature will evolve into a community-style format, allowing users to explore topic-based discussions and trending issues without joining specific chatrooms. Furthermore, a new short-form tab will enable users to discover, share, and enjoy trending videos within the app, providing a platform for creators to showcase their content.
