AI Mode in Search, which first made its debut as a shortcut in the Google app for Android back in April for participants of the Search Labs experiment, is now experiencing a broader rollout to users worldwide. This new shortcut icon is designed to facilitate a seamless transition into the AI-powered search experience.
AI Mode’s Shortcut Icon Reportedly Rolling Out Widely
According to a report from 9to5Google, the AI Mode widget shortcut is becoming accessible to an increasing number of Android users globally. The tech giant from Mountain View is distributing this new feature with the latest version of the Google app, version 16.28. Users will find the AI Mode shortcut integrated into the app’s 4×1 widget, which prominently displays the search bar.
Traditionally, this search bar has included two shortcuts: one for voice input via the microphone and another for Google Lens. However, Android users will now notice a third icon positioned at the far right. This new addition features a magnifying glass alongside the Gemini sparkle symbol, all encased in its own circular design. For those who do not see it immediately, a long press on the widget will allow access to the settings or customization panel, where users can navigate to shortcuts and select AI Mode from the second position on the list.
While this method provides the quickest access to AI Mode, the icon is also visible within the Google app itself. Users who have enrolled in the AI Mode experiment through Search Labs will find the icon embedded in the search box. For those who have not yet signed up, the icon will appear beneath the search bar, alongside options for the microphone, Lens, and Lens gallery.
Interestingly, the report notes that the icon is also expected to appear in the Discover feed interface within the search bar; however, staff members from Gadgets 360 have yet to observe this feature. It is possible that the rollout is currently limited to users in the United States. Notably, users in the U.S. also have access to the Search Live feature in AI Mode, which can be activated through Search Labs.
