Amazon has announced the impending closure of its Appstore for Android and the associated Coins program, effective this week. As of Wednesday, August 20, users will find that apps from the Appstore “will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices,” as detailed on the company’s website. In light of this transition, Amazon has indicated that users will receive refunds for any remaining Amazon Coins following the shutdown.

Why It Matters

Users have been cautioned that applications may start to malfunction, prompting a recommendation to transition to alternatives available on the Google Play Store. Additionally, users are encouraged to remove any remaining apps from their devices to mitigate potential data vulnerabilities. The closure of Amazon’s Appstore signifies the conclusion of a service that has been operational since its launch in 2011.

What To Know

Initially announced in February, Amazon’s decision to discontinue the Android Appstore is part of a broader strategy aimed at streamlining and enhancing its services and programs. This move follows the previous discontinuation of the Appstore on Windows last year.

It is important to note that this shutdown will specifically affect Android mobile devices, while the Appstore will continue to function on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices. Customers with active subscriptions can maintain their services on these Fire products, though they also have the option to cancel and receive refunds for subscriptions that extend beyond August 20. Users are advised to review or adjust their subscription preferences before the deadline.

As for Amazon Coins—previously utilized for apps, games, and in-app purchases via the Appstore—these became unavailable for purchase back in February. Customers can check their Coins balances on the Appstore homepage. Amazon has assured that any remaining coins in accounts after August 20 will be refunded, although specific details regarding this refund process will be provided at a later date.

What People Are Saying

In a statement to Android Police, Amazon expressed: “We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it. We’ve also decided to retire the Appstore Coins program. Both changes will be effective August 20, 2025. Customers will be refunded for any unused Coins they’ve previously purchased after that date.”
