Android Auto is getting a massive Material 3 makeover with new widgets, video apps, and more

At the recent Android Show: I/O Edition 2026, Google unveiled a series of exciting updates for Android Auto, enhancing the user experience for drivers and passengers alike. The introduction of Material 3 Expressive marks a significant shift in design philosophy, promising smoother animations and a more adaptable interface that caters to various screen sizes.

New features coming to Android Auto

Material 3 Expressive

With the adoption of Material 3 Expressive, Android Auto is set to transform its aesthetic appeal. This update introduces expressive fonts, fluid animations, and customizable wallpapers, creating a seamless transition from mobile devices to car infotainment systems. The enhanced user experience also means that Android Auto can now better accommodate car screens of diverse shapes and sizes.

Home screen widgets

After much anticipation, Google has officially rolled out home screen widgets for Android Auto. These widgets allow users to access essential information and actions directly from their car’s display, even while navigating. Drivers can now add shortcuts to favorite contacts, quick access to garage door controls, and real-time weather updates, streamlining the in-car experience.

Support for video apps and video-to-audio-only transition

In a notable advancement, Android Auto will soon support video applications, starting with YouTube. Users will be able to enjoy Full HD video playback at 60 frames per second in select vehicles, including models from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. This feature is designed for stationary use, allowing drivers to watch videos while parked. When driving resumes, Android Auto will automatically switch to audio-only mode, ensuring a safe and uninterrupted experience.

Dolby Atmos and music app refresh

Google is enhancing the auditory experience in supported vehicles by introducing Dolby Atmos spatial sound. This feature will be available in select models from brands such as BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Additionally, popular media apps like YouTube Music and Spotify are receiving visual updates aimed at improving usability while on the road.

Gemini Intelligence is also coming to Android Auto

The integration of Gemini Intelligence into Android Auto promises to elevate the functionality of the platform. This upgrade allows the system to understand user context and anticipate needs, streamlining tasks. For example, if a user receives a text requesting an address, the Magic Cue feature can quickly provide the relevant information, facilitating a swift response with just a tap. Furthermore, voice commands will enable users to automate tasks, such as placing a DoorDash order while driving.

Cars with Google built-in are also getting many of these features

Vehicles equipped with Google built-in will also benefit from these enhancements, including improved media applications, the seamless transition from video to audio, and access to meeting applications like Zoom. Google Maps will feature Immersive Navigation with live lane guidance, offering real-time advice based on the vehicle’s current lane and upcoming maneuvers, all processed through the car’s front-facing camera.

Feature rollout timeline

Google has announced that these features will gradually roll out to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in throughout the year. Historically, such updates have taken several weeks or even months to become widely available, but the prospect of these new functionalities certainly promises to enrich the in-car experience for users.
