Android’s upcoming ‘App Handles’ will bring clever multitasking to Pixel Fold [Video]

In a move that promises to enhance multitasking capabilities for foldable devices, Google has unveiled a new feature called “App Handles” in its latest Android Canary build. This innovative addition is designed specifically for devices like the Pixel Fold series, allowing users to manage their applications with greater flexibility.

Building upon the existing functionality of Bubbles, “App Handles” serve as pinned applications that reside on the taskbar, providing quick access without disrupting the content displayed on the screen. For instance, a recent demonstration on Twitter/X showcased the Calculator app positioned as an “App Handle” on a Pixel Fold. This setup enables the app to be opened in a pop-up window along the right side of the screen while Chrome operates in full-screen mode in the background. Users can also seamlessly switch between a pop-up, full-screen, or split-screen format as needed.

Moreover, the feature supports multiple apps simultaneously, as indicated by a “+” button adjacent to the Calculator icon, suggesting that users can customize their multitasking experience further.

This functionality appears to be particularly beneficial for tasks such as note-taking or monitoring ongoing activities, enhancing productivity without the need to navigate away from primary applications. While similar features have been offered by competitors like Samsung’s pop-up windows, “App Handles” represents a significant evolution in Android’s multitasking capabilities.

Currently, this feature is available exclusively in the latest Android Canary build (2608), with expectations for broader rollout in future Android updates.
