Google Keep for Android has undergone a thoughtful redesign of its “Note collection” widget, moving away from the traditional Material You sidebar. The update introduces a circular floating action button, reminiscent of the control seen in the “Single note” widget, which enhances user interaction by providing a pop-up menu upon tapping.
Streamlined Note Creation
This change necessitates an additional tap in the note-creation process, as users must first open the menu before selecting their desired note type. This adjustment aligns the design with the smaller, pill-shaped “Quick capture” widget, fostering a consistent user experience across the platform. While this may seem like a minor inconvenience, it results in a more compact presentation of entry options.
By eliminating the sidebar, Google has maximized the widget’s real estate, allowing for an edge-to-edge layout that showcases more of each note within the feed. Previously, the design left significant empty space, particularly when the widget was expanded to full-width on the homescreen. The new layout effectively reallocates this space to highlight note content, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality.
This update is part of version 5.26.365.x of Google Keep, which is currently being rolled out via the Play Store. As with many staged releases, users may experience varying timelines for availability across devices.
The widget modification follows the introduction of Keep Live, a feature available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers. Additionally, Google has broadened Keep’s integration within the Android ecosystem, including a Keep Notes feature in Google Messages and a “Find in note” search tool within the app itself.
While the changes to the homescreen widget may appear modest, they standardize the note creation process across Keep’s various widgets and optimize the use of available space in the feed. Observers are keenly anticipating further enhancements as the update continues to roll out in the coming days.
