Google has unveiled plans to enhance its Google Wallet Android app by introducing support for digital IDs in select European Union countries this summer. This initiative follows the recent rollout of ID passes in Brazil, India, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.
Enhancing Privacy and Security
The incorporation of digital IDs into the Google Wallet app empowers Android users to verify their identity while prioritizing privacy and security. The app will accommodate various types of state-issued identification, including passports from the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil. A key feature of these digital IDs is selective disclosure, allowing users to share only the pertinent details of their identification when necessary.
Partnership with Sparkasse Bank
In a significant move towards enhancing user privacy, Google has also announced a collaboration with Sparkasse Bank in Europe. This partnership aims to simplify the process of age verification on apps and websites without requiring users to disclose their name, address, or birthdate. Google elaborated, “This solution integrates directly with Android and Chrome, enabling seamless, one-click age checks on supported websites and apps, potentially even enabling whole new services — all without revealing personal data.”
Future Collaborations and Expansions
The integration of Sparkasse as a credential partner for age assurance in the EU is set to launch in the coming months, with Google indicating plans to collaborate with additional issuers in the future. Alongside the expansion of digital IDs, Google is also enhancing its Google Pay direct checkout feature in Europe. This enhancement will allow customers to view their Google Wallet payment options directly on retailers’ checkout pages, mirroring the functionality of Apple Pay in various apps and websites.
