Flagship Android phones showcase remarkable hardware engineering, yet the moment one interacts with the Google Pixel’s home screen, a sense of envy can arise. The Pixel experience offers a seamless integration where every animation, widget, and menu appears to be crafted by a singular, cohesive vision. However, this experience remains confined to Google’s own devices, leaving users of other brands peering in from the outside.
Breaking down the three pillars of the Pixel launcher
The Pixel Launcher is built upon three foundational features. Firstly, there is visual consistency throughout the user interface, achieved through Material You and Google’s distinctive design language. When the wallpaper changes, the system intelligently analyzes the image, extracts a dominant color, and generates five tonal palettes that are then applied across all interface elements.
The second pillar is simplicity. Unlike heavily customizable launchers, the Pixel Launcher prioritizes minimalism, resulting in an uncluttered and user-friendly interface, although this approach may not resonate with everyone.
The third pillar is fluidity. The animations within the Pixel Launcher are exceptionally smooth, setting a benchmark for others to aspire to. However, it is important to note that the Pixel Launcher does have its limitations. Compared to launchers from brands like Samsung or OnePlus, as well as third-party options such as Nova Launcher, customization capabilities are rather restricted. While users can hide certain apps through search filters, fundamental home screen layout adjustments, like customizing the dock or modifying desktop grids, often require convoluted workarounds.
An open source project that brings the Pixel experience to everyone
In my quest to replicate the Pixel experience on my device, I stumbled upon Lawnchair. The name cleverly plays on the word “launcher,” and its mission is to serve as an enhanced version of the Pixel Launcher. Lawnchair is an open-source project built on Launcher3, the same AOSP foundation that underpins Google’s launcher.
The philosophy guiding its developers is straightforward: utilize the Pixel Launcher’s foundation, integrate its exclusive features, and restore the customization options that Google has removed. Lawnchair meets all my criteria, implementing Material You to adapt colors in harmony with the wallpaper and system theme. It even recreates the At a Glance widget, enhanced by the Smartspacer add-on, which offers additional functionalities beyond the original widget.
Despite introducing more customization options, Lawnchair maintains a clean and intuitive interface. Users can control grid sizes, gestures, and app visibility without the clutter typically associated with more feature-rich launchers. Moreover, because Lawnchair shares its codebase with the Pixel Launcher, its animations remain fluid. While Android’s system limitations may hinder perfect integration with the recent apps screen, the overall experience closely mirrors that of other prominent third-party launchers.
The Lawnchair features that Google left behind
Having successfully ported the Pixel experience, I discovered that Lawnchair offers much more than a mere clone. It builds upon the Pixel Launcher’s foundation by addressing its key limitations, particularly those frequently voiced by Pixel owners.
A notable example is the inability to remove the permanent At a Glance and Search widgets, which occupy valuable screen space. With Lawnchair, a simple toggle allows users to hide one or both, granting full control over their layout once more. Additionally, the Pixel Launcher lacks support for icon packs—a staple of Android customization. Lawnchair, however, provides universal icon pack support, enabling extensive icon customization, along with options for adjusting icon sizes and fonts, including the ability to upload custom font files.
Grid layout is another area where Lawnchair excels. It offers user-defined grids for both the home screen and app drawer, facilitating more efficient layouts. Furthermore, Lawnchair restores organizational and privacy features that the Pixel Launcher lacks, such as the ability to hide apps from the app drawer. These features are not mere luxuries; they are essential aspects of user control that Google has removed in its pursuit of simplicity akin to Apple’s approach. Lawnchair effectively reinstates these functionalities.
The Pixel experience, perfected and unlocked for all
Lawnchair 15 achieves an impressive level of parity with the Pixel experience, but it goes beyond that. It systematically dismantles the confines of the golden cage that Google has constructed, restoring the control and customization that epitomize the Android ethos. For any Android enthusiast using a non-Pixel phone who has ever felt the pangs of software envy, the solution is now at hand. Lawnchair 15 offers the best of both worlds: the Pixel experience, refined, liberated, and returned to the user’s hands where it rightfully belongs.
