After nearly a decade of loyal service from a 2003 PT Cruiser, the time came for a change when a costly transmission failure signaled the end of an era. Enter the 2022 Hyundai Tucson, a vehicle that not only represents a significant technological leap but also introduces a suite of modern features, including the much-lauded Android Auto. As I navigated this new digital landscape, I quickly realized that my experience could have been enhanced with a few key settings that I wish I had known from the start.
Taskbar Widgets
By default, Android Auto’s taskbar is designed for app switching, but a simple tweak can transform it into a multitasking powerhouse. To enable taskbar widgets, access the Settings app on your Android phone, search for “Android Auto,” and navigate to the settings page. In the Display section, toggle on Taskbar widgets. This adjustment allows your taskbar to display miniature widgets tailored to your current activities. For instance, if you’re listening to music while using Google Maps, the taskbar will show a mini music player for easy access to playback controls. This small change has significantly improved my driving experience, making multitasking seamless and intuitive.
Launcher Customization
While the customization options in Android Auto may not rival those of your smartphone, there is still room for personalization. On the same settings page, scroll to the Display section and select Customize launcher. Here, you can rearrange your app drawer by dragging and dropping, as well as hide any apps you don’t frequently use. This feature, though modest, allows for a more organized and user-friendly interface while driving.
Change Home Screen Layout
For those who often juggle navigation and media playback, the default layout may feel inconvenient. Android Auto typically places the navigation app on the left and the media app on the right, which can be out of reach in larger vehicles. To adjust this, return to the settings page and navigate to the Advanced section. Select Change layout and opt for Media closer to driver. This simple switch brings your music controls within easier reach, enhancing the overall usability of the system.
Play Media by Default
Android Auto is set to automatically resume the last played media upon startup, which can be a mixed blessing. If you prefer to choose your audio before it starts playing, you can disable this feature. In the settings, find the Startup section and toggle off Start music automatically. This adjustment ensures that you have control over what plays when you enter your vehicle, allowing for a more tailored listening experience.
Gemini Actions
For those willing to embrace the capabilities of Gemini, there’s a clever way to streamline your driving routine. From the Customize launcher page, tap Add a shortcut to the launcher and select A Gemini action. This feature allows you to create multi-step commands that can execute several tasks simultaneously. For example, I configured an action called “Driving home” that initiates turn-by-turn directions, adjusts the air conditioning, activates smart home lights, and plays a favorite playlist—all with a single command. By investing time into setting up these actions, you can significantly enhance your driving experience, making it more efficient and enjoyable.
