Microsoft has announced the impending retirement of its Outlook Lite app for Android, with the official sunset date set for May 25, 2026. This lightweight version of the popular email application was designed to cater to users with low-end devices and slower network connections, providing a streamlined experience since its launch in 2022.
Transitioning to Full Outlook
As the date approaches, users of Outlook Lite will need to prepare for a transition. While the app will remain launchable after the sunset date, functionality will be severely limited; mailbox access will be disabled, and navigation within the app will cease to work. To maintain access to their emails and calendar items, users are encouraged to switch to the full Outlook app.
Microsoft has clarified that user accounts will not be deleted or disabled during this transition. All existing emails, calendar entries, and attachments will remain accessible, provided users sign in to their accounts via the full Outlook Mobile app. To facilitate this switch, an “Upgrade” option has been integrated into the Lite app, directing users to the Outlook page on Google Play for a seamless transition.
For those who may not wish to adopt the full Outlook experience, a variety of alternative email applications are available. Options such as Proton Mail and Gmail offer robust features that may suit different user preferences.
