PostgreSQL specialist Supabase snags $100M in funding

Five months following Databricks Inc.’s acquisition of a key competitor for billion, Supabase has successfully secured 0 million in late-stage funding to advance its innovative database tool, Multigres.

The Series E funding round, announced today, was spearheaded by Accel and Peak XV, elevating Supabase’s valuation to an impressive billion. This marks a significant milestone for the company, which previously raised 0 million in April, at which point it reported an installed base of over 2 million developers. In a testament to its growing popularity, Supabase now boasts more than 4 million developers utilizing its platform.

Innovative Offerings and Features

Supabase provides a tailored version of the widely-used PostgreSQL relational database, enhanced with cybersecurity tools, a content delivery network, and various usability improvements. Notably, the platform includes a robust suite of features aimed at artificial intelligence developers, contributing to its rapid user growth.

One of the challenges with standard PostgreSQL is its inefficiency in handling embeddings—the mathematical structures that AI models use to store knowledge. To address this, Supabase employs an open-source tool known as pgvector, which facilitates support for embeddings. These embeddings serve as compressed numerical representations of data, such as product descriptions, allowing developers to convert their business data into embeddings through a built-in application programming interface (API). The ease of use is further enhanced by a Python client provided by Supabase, enabling complex tasks to be executed with minimal code.

Additionally, Supabase’s AI feature set includes Edge Functions, a tool that allows developers to create serverless functions using JavaScript. This integration with Hugging Face—a cloud platform hosting over 100,000 open-source AI models—enables customers to process their stored embeddings efficiently.

Beyond AI capabilities, Supabase has introduced numerous enhancements to the core PostgreSQL feature set, including a branching tool that allows developers to swiftly create copies of production databases. This branching functionality is a key selling point for Neon, a competing PostgreSQL distribution recently acquired by Databricks.

With the new funding, Supabase aims to develop an “enterprise-scale” version of its platform, Multigres. The company has enlisted Sugu Sougoumarane, co-creator of the popular open-source technology Vitess, to assist in this endeavor. Vitess enhances the scalability of relational databases by distributing them across multiple servers.

Supabase also intends to utilize its latest capital for additional initiatives. Chief Executive Paul Copplestone noted in a recent blog post that the company has consistently allowed employees to sell 25% of their vested stock during funding rounds, a practice that will continue. Furthermore, Supabase is accelerating its hiring efforts for key open-source projects.

Looking ahead, Supabase plans to follow this funding round with a million raise that will be accessible to early customers and contributors to its open-source platform.
