Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27924 (Canary Channel)

August 14, 2025

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27924 to the Canary Channel. ISOs for this build are now available for download.

What’s new in Build 27924

Copilot+ PC experiences

We are initiating the rollout of various Copilot+ PC experiences for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. These enhancements will be available on Copilot+ PCs, although some features will be introduced gradually. For instance, improvements to Windows Search and the agent in Settings are on the way. Additionally, we are still working on enabling features like image descriptions in Narrator, so if you don’t see certain functionalities immediately after updating, please be assured that this is expected. Our team is diligently working to ensure a comprehensive rollout across the Canary Channel.

As with all Canary Channel releases, the quality of these features may not align with those found in the Dev or Beta Channels. Users should anticipate some inconsistencies. We will document known issues, particularly those that significantly impact functionality, such as the issue related to Click to Do outlined below. We encourage you to provide feedback on any issues encountered while using these Copilot+ experiences via the Feedback Hub.

Advanced Settings

Advanced settings are now accessible through Settings > System > Advanced, featuring a redesigned interface aimed at making settings more user-friendly for a broader audience. This redesign introduces several new options:

  • Enable long paths: This feature allows users to bypass MAX_PATH limitations in common Win32 file and directory functions.
  • Virtual workspaces: Users can enable or disable virtual environments such as Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox.
  • File Explorer + version control: This option enables Git information to be displayed directly within File Explorer. By selecting your repository folder, you can view details such as branch, diff count, and last commit message.

FEEDBACK: Please share your feedback on GitHub at microsoft/WindowsAdvancedSettings.

Changes and Improvements

[Input]

  • The pointer indicator has been adjusted for increased transparency, allowing users to see what lies beneath the crosshairs more clearly.
  • The keyboard shortcut for the new pointer indicator has temporarily changed from CTRL + WIN + X to CTRL + WIN + ALT + X to minimize accidental activations.

[Windows MIDI Services]

  • The inbox preview MIDI Service and API have undergone a feedback-driven breaking change, allowing for optional waiting for messages to be fully sent before returning from function calls. Applications developed against previous versions of the Windows MIDI Services MIDI 2.0 SDK will need to update to the latest preview available at https://aka.ms/midireleases and be recompiled for proper functionality. Fixes

[General]

  • Resolved an issue where the progress wheel displayed as a rectangle glyph instead of rendering correctly during upgrades to the latest builds.

[Widgets]

  • Addressed an issue that caused widgets to disappear or malfunction for some Insiders following the previous flight.

[Remote Desktop]

  • Fixed a problem where remote desktop only utilized the primary monitor, even when configured for multiple monitors.

[Other]

  • Corrected an underlying webauth.dll crash from the previous flight, which may have affected the use of passkeys.

Known Issues

[General]

  • [IMPORTANT NOTE FOR COPILOT+ PCs] If you are joining the Canary Channel on a new Copilot+ PC from the Dev Channel, Release Preview Channel, or retail, you may encounter issues with Windows Hello PIN and biometrics, resulting in error 0xd0000225 and the message “Something went wrong, and your PIN isn’t available.” You can recreate your PIN by clicking “Set up my PIN.”
  • Users may experience multiple error pop-ups regarding unexpected elements when opening Group Policy Editor.
  • An underlying issue with dao360.dll in this build may lead to crashes in some applications.

[Click to Do (Preview)]

The following known issues will be addressed in future updates for Windows Insiders:

  • [NEW] Text and image actions in Click to Do may not function correctly, and the application may crash. This issue is slated for resolution in the next flight.

Snipping Tool Update

An update for Snipping Tool (version 11.2507.14.0 and higher) is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This update introduces window mode screen recording, providing an effortless way to capture activity within a specific app window. To begin, simply toggle to the Record option in the capture toolbar and select window mode from the dropdown menu for Recording area.

New option to set recording region by selecting a specific app window in the Snipping Tool toolbar.

When window mode is selected, Snipping Tool will automatically adjust the recording region to fit the chosen app window precisely. However, once recording commences, the region remains fixed, meaning that if the app moves or is obscured by another window, the recording will not follow. This feature offers a straightforward method to record activities in a defined area of your screen without the need for cropping or adjustments later.

Screen recording setup of the Paint app window with UI denoting that screen recording is set to the position of that specific app window.

FEEDBACK: Please provide your feedback in the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Snipping Tool.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel

  • The builds released to the Canary Channel represent the latest platform changes early in the development cycle and should not be interpreted as aligned with any specific Windows release. Features and experiences included in these builds may never be released as we explore various concepts and gather feedback. Features may evolve, be removed, or replaced and may not appear beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features could eventually be included in future Windows releases when they are ready.
  • Many features in the Canary Channel are deployed using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and gradually expanding as we monitor feedback to assess their reception before wider distribution.
  • Some features may debut in the Dev and Beta Channels prior to appearing in the Canary Channel.
  • Features currently under development previewed with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized; localization will occur over time as features are finalized. If you encounter localization issues in your language, please report them via the Feedback Hub.
  • To exit the Canary Channel, a clean installation of Windows 11 will be necessary. Insiders cannot switch to a channel receiving builds with lower build numbers without performing a clean installation due to technical setup requirements.
  • The desktop watermark displayed in the lower right corner of the desktop is standard for these pre-release builds.
  • For a comprehensive overview of which build is in which Insider channel, please visit Flight Hub.

Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon
