Microsoft’s recent security updates have stirred a wave of concern among users, as they inadvertently introduce a series of disruptions across various platforms. The tech giant has acknowledged that these updates can interfere with Remote Desktop Services (RDS), mute certain USB audio devices, and even hinder basic functions in Excel.
Remote Desktop Services Disruptions
Reports of issues with RDS began to emerge on social media shortly after the updates were rolled out. Microsoft has confirmed that users across multiple Windows versions, including Windows 11 26H1 and Windows Server 2012, are experiencing connectivity problems. Symptoms include failed connections after a few minutes, servers freezing at the “Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration” screen, and related tools such as Microsoft Management Console (MMC) becoming unresponsive. In some cases, the Windows Update page itself may stop responding, displaying a perpetual loading indicator.
For those managing virtual machines, a temporary solution has been suggested: stopping and restarting the virtual machine may restore connectivity. Microsoft is actively working on a fix, though no specific timeline has been provided.
USB Audio Device Complications
In addition to RDS issues, Microsoft has also identified problems with USB Audio Class 1.0 devices on Windows 11 26H1, 25H2, and 24H2. Users may find themselves grappling with a lack of audio, malfunctioning sound settings, or difficulties with multichannel audio. A workaround has been suggested, with some users successfully restoring audio by switching to two-channel mode. Microsoft is aware of the situation and is working towards a resolution.
Excel Functionality Challenges
Users of Microsoft’s productivity suite have not been spared from the fallout. A fix intended to address vulnerabilities related to remote code execution and information disclosure in Excel has inadvertently disrupted a fundamental function: the paste operation. According to Microsoft, users may attempt to paste content only to find that the source remains selected while the destination remains unchanged, all without any indication of failure.
This issue affects various versions of Excel, including 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024. Unfortunately, for those with automatic updates enabled, this problematic update may have already been installed without their knowledge. While Microsoft has yet to provide a workaround, some users have reported success by uninstalling and reinstalling Office, while others have managed to resolve the issue through specific commands to remove the security update. However, it is important to note that removing the update also eliminates its associated security fixes.
