To access Windows Backup for Organizations, users must install the September 2025 Windows Monthly Cumulative Update on devices joined to Entra. However, it is important to note that this feature is turned off by default and requires activation by an IT administrator through the configuration of backup and restore policy settings.
Once enabled, this tool offers the capability to back up essential Windows settings, user preferences, and applications installed via the Microsoft Store on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems. It plays a crucial role in restoring these elements during the setup of Windows 11 PCs, ensuring a seamless user experience.

The data backed up through Windows Backup for Organizations is securely stored in the Exchange Online cloud, specifically in the Country/Region selected during tenant creation in the admin portal. Administrators can easily view the data storage location by navigating to the Tenant Admin Center under Admin > Settings > Org Settings > Organization Profile > Data Location.
Microsoft assures customers that their data is protected using various encryption methods and will only be accessed when necessary, under strict management oversight. This access is typically limited to situations such as troubleshooting or ensuring legal compliance. The company further clarifies, “Microsoft personnel may use customer data only for purposes compatible with providing you with the contracted services, such as troubleshooting and improving features like protection from malware.”
