Optimize Windows 11 with these 8 settings tweaks

Windows 11, which commands a significant 62% of the global Windows desktop market share as of January 2026, offers a plethora of features designed to enhance user experience. Drawing from personal insights and recommendations from peers, several settings can be adjusted to refine daily interactions with this operating system.

Find Settings

Accessing the Settings menu is straightforward. Simply click on the Start menu and type Settings. This action opens the Settings window, leading you to the Home screen where various options await exploration. The left-side menu is particularly useful for navigating through specific settings.

Title Bar Shake

One feature that can be more of a nuisance than a benefit is the title bar shake, which minimizes all open windows when the mouse is jiggled while dragging a window. To disable this unintentional minimization, navigate to Settings, select System from the left menu, and then click on Multitasking. Here, you can turn off the Title bar window shake feature.

End Task from Task Bar

Historically, when an application freezes, the process of accessing the Task Manager via Ctrl + Alt + Delete could be cumbersome. Fortunately, Windows 11 allows users to end a task directly from the taskbar. To enable this feature, go to System > Advanced > End Task, simplifying the troubleshooting process significantly.

Customize the Start Menu

Personalizing the Start menu can enhance accessibility. Under Personalization > Start, users can opt for a layout that features more pinned applications rather than files. Additionally, incorporating folder icons for frequently accessed directories—such as Settings, File Explorer, Documents, and Downloads—can streamline navigation.

Taskbar Adjustment

For those who find the Widgets feature distracting, disabling it can lead to a more focused workspace. To do this, head to Personalization > Taskbar and toggle off the Widgets option, eliminating the clutter that can disrupt workflow.

Clean Up Automatic Startup Launches

Over time, numerous applications may accumulate and launch automatically at startup, leading to slower boot times. To manage these, visit Apps > Startup and disable any unnecessary applications, ideally performing this maintenance at least once a year.

Accessibility for Ease of Use

Windows 11 offers a range of Accessibility settings to enhance usability. For instance, users can increase screen scaling or adjust text size by navigating to Accessibility > Text size. Additionally, restoring the traditional scrollbar can be accomplished by enabling the Always show scrollbar option under Accessibility > Visual effects.

Customizing the mouse pointer size and enabling the Mouse indicator feature can also improve navigation. This indicator highlights the cursor with a circle when the Ctrl key is pressed, making it easier to locate. Furthermore, the Text Cursor indicator can be customized to enhance visibility while typing.

Privacy

To maintain privacy, users can disable ad tracking by adjusting settings found in Privacy & security > General. Setting all options to Off ensures a more private computing experience.

Updates for My Network

For those managing multiple devices, Windows Update settings can optimize bandwidth usage. By navigating to Windows Update > Advanced Options > Delivery Optimization, users can ensure that updates are shared only within their local network, preventing data from being sent to external computers.

These thoughtful adjustments can significantly enhance the daily use of Windows 11, creating a more efficient and personalized computing environment.
