Someone made ‘Windows’ for the Game Boy Color, and you can buy it

Originally launched in 1998, the Game Boy Color surprised many with its impressive capabilities, especially considering its 8-bit architecture. While it may not be able to run a full version of Windows, a creative developer has crafted a unique homage to the iconic operating system, packaged as a physical cartridge.

GBS Windows: A Nostalgic Journey

Dubbed GBS Windows, this project mimics the look and feel of Windows 3.1, tailored specifically for Nintendo’s beloved handheld console. Developed using GB Studio, this creation is more of a playful nod to retro computing than a fully functional operating system. Available through an Etsy shop named RubenRetro, the cartridge comes complete with a retail box that cleverly combines elements from both the original Game Boy packaging and the classic Windows 3.1 design.

The “operating system” presents itself on the Game Boy Color’s modest 1.7-inch display, featuring a selection of charming applications. Among them are versions of Minesweeper and a game called “Cannon,” reminiscent of Missile Command. Additionally, users can enjoy a miniature MIDI piano and a media player capable of playing a few sample tracks, even while multitasking with other apps. A standout feature is the pint-sized Paint program, which allows users to create pixel art that can be printed on a Game Boy Printer, should one be available. The faux BIOS screen, displaying the “American Megatrain” text and highlighting the GBC’s eight kilobytes of memory, adds an extra layer of charm to this nostalgic experience.

Despite its appeal, this project appears to be a labor of love from a dedicated creator, with initial stock selling out rapidly. However, RubenRetro is committed to producing new retro boxes, manuals, and various accessories regularly. For those interested, signing up for Etsy alerts may provide an opportunity to purchase new stock in the future. The complete package was priced around USD, although shipping costs from Spain may vary based on the buyer’s location.
