Today, we commemorate a significant milestone in the tech world: the 30th anniversary of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, which was officially released on August 24, 1996. This version, codenamed “Tukwila,” marked a pivotal moment in Microsoft’s ongoing Windows NT project, harmonizing the robust NT operating system with a refined version of the Windows Explorer desktop that had debuted with Windows 95. Internally referred to as the “Shell Update Release,” NT 4 was a testament to Microsoft’s commitment to innovation and user experience.
Windows 95, which launched exactly one year earlier on August 24, 1995, was initially codenamed “Chicago” and underwent a lengthy development process. This journey saw the desktop shell evolve dramatically, with various unfinished builds surfacing over the years. Notably, early iterations lacked features such as taskbar minimization and a functional Start Button, showcasing the experimental nature of the development phase.
By the time Windows 95 was ready for market, its Explorer desktop had come together, albeit not without its challenges. The initial release did not include a web browser; instead, users were offered a desktop icon for the Microsoft Network (MSN), a dial-up social network that attempted to merge local and remote resources. This design choice was influenced by legal considerations, as Microsoft sought to avoid conflicts with Apple, which had previously sued Digital Research over similarities with its GEM Desktop.
Windows 95’s desktop experience was characterized by a unique structure, with drive icons residing within a virtual folder called “My Computer,” while “Network Neighborhood” allowed users to navigate file servers. However, this design came with limitations, as the entire desktop would freeze during lengthy file operations, a drawback that users had to contend with.
For a brief period, Microsoft maintained two distinct operating system lines, each with its own user interface. The inaugural version of Windows NT, known as “Windows NT 3.1,” was designed to align with the existing DOS-based Windows 3.1. Despite its stability, NT 3.1 required high-end hardware for optimal performance, making it a costly investment for many users. Subsequent versions, such as NT 3.5 and NT 3.51, introduced enhancements like long filename support and improved reliability, but they still retained the outdated GUI from earlier Windows iterations.
With the launch of NT 4, Microsoft successfully integrated the modern Explorer UI from Windows 95 into the NT kernel. This transition provided users with a contemporary interface while maintaining the reliability of the NT operating system. At that time, Windows 95 was still in its early stages, lacking the advanced features of NT 4, such as the journaling NTFS filesystem, which offered greater resistance to data corruption.
However, NT 4 was not without its shortcomings. To enhance desktop responsiveness, Microsoft relocated the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) directly into the Windows kernel, which inadvertently introduced stability issues. Bugs in display drivers could lead to system crashes, a challenge that persisted until the release of Windows Vista in 2007. Additionally, NT 4 did not include the much-anticipated Cairo object-based filesystem, although its interface design influenced future iterations of Explorer.
As technology rapidly advanced, NT 4 began to show its age. Just days after its release, Windows 95B introduced FAT32, and subsequent updates added support for USB interfaces—features that NT 4 lacked. Its Plug ’n Play capabilities were also minimal, remaining largely unaddressed until the arrival of NT 5, later marketed as Windows 2000.
Despite these limitations, NT 4 proved to be a formidable operating system, combining a solid core with rich server functionalities and a user-friendly interface. Thirty years ago, Windows NT 4.0 began to fulfill its promise, signaling a turning point in the competitive landscape of operating systems and contributing to the challenges faced by rivals like Novell NetWare and Apple.
