Windows Update: Unwanted side effects occurred

Microsoft has recently acknowledged a series of issues stemming from the latest updates for Windows 11, particularly affecting the update preview released last Friday. Users have reported encountering firewall error messages and, in some cases, their computers failing to boot altogether after applying the updates.

Firewall Error: No Intervention Necessary

According to the Windows Release Health Notes, the update preview has led to firewall error events being logged in security logs. Specifically, users can find an error with event number 2042 related to the Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security. The error message indicates a “Config Read Failed” issue, suggesting that “More data is available.” Microsoft reassures users that, despite the frequent logging of this event upon device restart, it does not signify a malfunction of the Windows Firewall and can be safely ignored.

Microsoft maintains that the Windows Firewall is operating normally and that no immediate action is needed to address this error. The company has indicated that the issue is linked to a function currently under development, which has yet to be fully implemented. This error primarily impacts Windows 11 24H2, with plans for a resolution in a forthcoming update.

Startup Problems with Fujitsu PCs

In a separate but related issue, several users of older Fujitsu Esprimo PCs have reported that their devices are unable to start following the installation of the June security updates. This problem has sparked discussions on platforms like Reddit, where users have highlighted difficulties with various models, including the Fujitsu Esprimo P556, P756, Q956, and D756, among others. Affected devices reportedly display a black screen upon startup.

Investigations suggest that these startup issues may be linked to a DBX update, which pertains to a database of bootloaders that are blocked when Smart Boot is enabled. One Reddit user speculated that the BIOS of these older computers may be outdated, necessitating an increase in the DBX database size—a modification already made in BIOS versions for newer models. Instructions for updating the firmware to BIOS version 1.33 for the P556 PCs have been shared in Microsoft’s forums, although they are primarily in Italian and require translation for broader accessibility. Fujitsu has also provided an update package containing the latest BIOS versions for various PCs, but the solutions are not particularly user-friendly, often requiring users to physically open their computers and adjust internal components.

As of now, Microsoft has not officially confirmed the startup issues affecting Fujitsu PCs, and it appears that the company is not yet working on a targeted solution.
