Pavan Davuluri Discusses How AI Will Impact the Next Windows

In a recent internal video interview, Pavan Davuluri, the executive responsible for Windows product development, shared insights into the future of the operating system. He emphasized the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in shaping the next generation of Windows, which aims to cater to a diverse range of customers.

Davuluri remarked, “Today, we’re on the journey of building the next generation of Windows for the breadth of our customers.” This journey encompasses various initiatives, including enhancements to Windows 11, the introduction of Copilot+ devices, and advancements in Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop.

While this video is distinct from the earlier “vision” series released by the Windows team, it nonetheless provides a glimpse into the evolving landscape of Windows. Davuluri noted that the interaction experiences on Windows are set to undergo significant transformations in the coming decades. “The operating system is increasingly authentic and multimodal,” he stated, highlighting the integration of voice, vision, pen, and touch as fundamental components of user interaction.

When discussing the impact of AI, Davuluri pointed out the transformative capabilities of on-device AI models, particularly in file search functionalities. He explained, “They bring a bunch of new capabilities and agencies to the platform and the device itself.” This includes innovations like improved Windows Search, which now incorporates a semantic indexer to enhance search relevance and accuracy.

“The beauty with the semantic indexer is it has the capability to understand content that is being searched in addition to keyword search,” he elaborated. This advancement promises a more meaningful search experience, allowing users to find information more efficiently. Additionally, the new “Click to Do” feature aims to streamline user tasks by reducing friction across the operating system and applications.

Davuluri also highlighted the recent introduction of an AI agent in the Settings app, which enables users to interact using natural language. “You can just interact with Settings and then ask, ‘Hey, fix this mouse cursor size for me,’ and it just happens,” he explained, showcasing the potential for intuitive user experiences.

Looking ahead, he identified the integration of cloud capabilities through Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop as a significant area of evolution. While he acknowledged that these solutions may not replace traditional PCs for all users, they represent a shift towards a hybrid model that combines local power with cloud functionality.

“With the new Windows app and all these experiences to make Windows adaptive, or hybrid, local AI and cloud are coming together,” he noted. This evolution aims to provide customers with simple, secure devices that prioritize ease of management and usability.

As the conversation progressed, Davuluri articulated a vision for the future of computing, suggesting that interactions with PCs will become more ambient and pervasive. “We will see computing become more ambient and more pervasive,” he predicted, emphasizing the importance of multimodal interactions and context-aware computing.
