Meta has made a significant decision to phase out its standalone Messenger applications for Windows and Mac computers. Users can expect these apps to cease functioning approximately 60 days from now, likely around December 15, 2025. The desktop applications, which have facilitated messaging, voice and video calls, as well as notifications directly on computers, will no longer receive support following this transition. After the shutdown, any attempts to access the apps will redirect users to Messenger.com or Facebook.com, depending on their account configurations.
As this change approaches, users are encouraged to back up their messages and media to ensure that their conversations remain intact. Meta advises utilizing features such as secure storage and a personal PIN to safeguard chat history, allowing for a smooth transition to the web-based Messenger or mobile applications. This proactive approach will help users maintain continuity in their conversations even after the desktop apps are retired.
Transitioning to Web-Based Messaging
This decision is part of a broader shift by Meta towards web-based messaging solutions. In 2024, the company launched a Progressive Web App (PWA) version of Messenger, designed to operate entirely within a browser while offering functionalities akin to the desktop applications. This PWA model not only minimizes the need for separate software updates but also simplifies maintenance and enhances accessibility across various devices. Earlier this year, the Messenger desktop app was also removed from the Mac App Store, indicating that new installations were no longer supported. This move is consistent with Meta’s overarching strategy to unify messaging across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
In addition to these changes, Meta is actively enhancing its Threads app by introducing several major features, including a private messaging (DM) option, positioning itself to compete vigorously with Musk-owned X. Reports suggest that the platform is also testing a long-form text feature to further engage users and distinguish itself from Instagram.
Despite these advancements, Meta continues to face scrutiny and controversy. Recently, New York City filed a lawsuit against the company, citing concerns that features like infinite scrolling negatively impact youth mental health. Additionally, in October 2024, a federal judge permitted lawsuits from over 30 US states, alleging that Meta’s platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, are addictive to children and teenagers. The company has also encountered backlash following its announcement that user AI chat data would be utilized to personalize ads and feeds across its platforms. Users currently lack the option to opt out of this data usage, although they can choose not to engage with Meta AI products.
