This week in PC games: Pathologic 3, a fresh Pokémon rival, a mind-bending FPS and some crablike base building

Before diving into the latest offerings in the PC gaming world, a brief note of reflection is warranted. A hiatus in our coverage occurred last December, attributed to an overwhelming amount of seasonal content preparation. However, the truth is far more peculiar: I found myself consumed by the Maw, a metaphorical beast that has now relinquished its hold on me. My escape was less than graceful, as I navigated through its depths without the necessary climbing gear, resulting in an experience I’d prefer to keep under wraps. Thankfully, the aftermath of this ordeal is only perceptible in higher dimensions, leaving our reality relatively unscathed.

New Releases to Explore

  • Dunecrawl emerges as a standout title, inviting players to traverse a vast desert landscape atop formidable, weaponized crabs. This game promises a unique twist on cooperative gameplay, allowing up to four players to engage in this crustacean-centric adventure.
  • Feed The Reactor introduces an incremental clicker experience where players feed various fuels into a cosmic vortex. As energy is generated, players unlock narrative layers set in a bizarre galaxy, featuring an alien fishperson lamenting their perpetual conflict with crabs—an amusing nod to the ongoing theme.
  • StarRupture, an early access title from the developers of Green Hell, invites players to construct outposts on alien planets while fending off waves of crab-like monsters. This game is sure to appeal to fans of both strategy and action genres.
  • Death Machine presents a pixel-art metroidvania experience with 19 bosses, at least one of which is likely to be an eight-legged invertebrate, continuing the trend of crustacean encounters.
  • In a departure from the crab-centric narrative, Oddcore offers a chaotic first-person shooter experience set in a theme park filled with bizarre backroom spaces and corporate satire. Its lack of crab references may be a point of contention for some.
  • On a more nostalgic note, EvoCreo is a creature-collecting game reminiscent of classic Game Boy Advance titles, featuring over 170 creatures to capture and battle. One can only hope that at least one of these creatures pays homage to our crustacean friends, lest we raise concerns with the Pokémon Company.
  • Ancient Farm transports players to ancient Egypt, where they manage a farm amidst historical landscapes. Despite the dry setting, the inclusion of rivers suggests that the developers may not have entirely escaped the clutches of crab lore, as the Acanthothelphusa niloticus lurks nearby.
  • For those seeking a more intense gaming experience, Pathologic 3 from Ice-Pick Lodge presents a grim narrative where players have 12 days to save a town plagued by disease. The game challenges players to impose quarantines and navigate the delicate balance between mania and apathy, with any potential crab encounters likely to be of a more unsettling nature.

Meanwhile, the annual CES hardware tradeshow is underway in Las Vegas, where discussions about GPU and RAM prices, new screen technologies, and even novelty gadgets are taking center stage. Our team is focused on solidifying coverage plans for the upcoming years, akin to the migratory patterns of Cuban red crabs, as we prepare to contribute to the ongoing dialogue in the gaming industry.
