EnterpriseDB (EDB), a prominent player in the sovereign AI and data landscape, has announced the community release of CloudNativePG 1.29, marking a significant advancement for the leading open-source Postgres® operator designed for Kubernetes. As the primary contributor to this project, EDB is also unveiling an enterprise-grade data protection solution tailored for its commercial CNPG operator.
The Mandate for Agentic Success and European Security Compliance
In the context of AI and data sovereignty, open-source strategies are becoming increasingly vital for 80% of major enterprises across the EMEA region. A mere 13% of these organizations are achieving success with their AI and data initiatives, primarily through the use of sovereign data platforms, often based on Postgres in hybrid environments. This approach not only enhances control and compliance but also delivers returns on investment that can be as high as five times. These enterprises are thriving by leveraging sovereignty and agility within their secure environments.
The EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) mandates a secure and compliant foundation that includes comprehensive software supply chain visibility, verified component provenance, a Software Bill of Materials (SBOM), and independently managed security patching. Gabriele Bartolini, VP and Chief Architect of Kubernetes at EDB, noted, “Over 80% of organizations now run Kubernetes in production—with databases as the primary workload and AI/ML adoption accelerating fast. This shift is redefining how PostgreSQL must operate: not as a static database, but as a portable, cloud-native foundation for sovereign AI.”
Modular Extensions and Supply Chain Security in CNPG 1.29
CloudNativePG (CNPG) has rapidly established itself as the standard for running PostgreSQL in Kubernetes, garnering over 8,000 stars on GitHub. EDB, as the lead maintainer, continues to drive its evolution with monthly releases. The latest version, 1.29, introduces modular extensions and built-in supply chain security, allowing users to decouple PostgreSQL extensions from the core database. This innovation eliminates the need for monolithic, custom-built images, significantly reducing operational complexity. Users can now dynamically install only the extensions they require, such as AI-driven vector search, on demand, fostering a more flexible, lightweight, and secure Postgres deployment model.
Bartolini elaborated, “By embedding the intelligence of a DBA as an operational brain within Kubernetes, you remove the Operational Wall of the hyperscalers, creating a DBaaS that is automated enough for developers but sovereign enough for the enterprise.”
Kubernetes-Native Backup and Enterprise Data Protection
As CNPG advances open-source innovation, EDB is set to enhance these capabilities for enterprise customers with a next-generation, Kubernetes-native data protection solution, currently in preview within EDB Postgres® AI for CloudNativePG. This solution transcends traditional backup tools designed for pre-container environments, offering Zero Data Loss (RPO=0) through native WAL streaming. Managed through a centralized interface, it provides rapid global disaster recovery and end-to-end encryption with FIPS 140-3 level security. This cloud-neutral strategy ensures that enterprise workloads remain resilient and portable across various environments, free from provider lock-in.
Each component, from modular extensions to enterprise capabilities like data protection, is delivered as a verified, immutable artifact, ensuring that what operates in production is precisely what was tested. This zero-trust model aligns with compliance frameworks such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), incorporating built-in support for SBOMs, clear component provenance, and independent security patching.
The Gold Standard for Enterprise Postgres on Kubernetes
By alleviating cloud infrastructure overhead and restoring operational control, organizations can transition from unpredictable cloud expenditures to a more manageable cost model, while simultaneously unlocking consistent, high-performance Postgres across diverse environments. These advancements build upon EDB’s longstanding commitment to PostgreSQL, CloudNativePG, and the broader open-source ecosystem, solidifying its position as a leading commercial contributor to PostgreSQL, responsible for over 30% of core development and 45% of ecosystem contributions.
At KubeCon Europe, EDB showcased a preview of its new data protection solution, with experts presenting at various sessions, including a discussion on Building a Data and AI Platform with PostgreSQL.
EDB Postgres® AI (EDB PG AI) stands as the first open, enterprise-grade sovereign data and AI platform—secure, compliant, and scalable, whether on-premises or across clouds. Built on Postgres, the world’s leading database, EDB PG AI integrates transactional, analytical, and AI workloads, empowering organizations to operationalize their data and LLMs while maintaining control over sovereign environments. Supported by a global partner network, EDB PG AI offers up to 99.999% availability along with hybrid management and a built-in AI factory. EDB’s deep commitment to the vitality of the global PostgreSQL community is evident in its active contributions to the project.
