“Xbox mode is easily the headline feature”: In May’s Windows 11 update, I walk through the 11 upgrades that change how we use the OS, and why some of them surprised me

May 2, 2026

Microsoft is set to initiate the rollout of the May 2026 Security Update for Windows 11 on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. This update, arriving in the fifth month of the year, promises to introduce new features, enhance existing functionalities, and implement crucial security fixes. Among the highlights is the eagerly anticipated Xbox mode, which began its rollout on April 30 as part of this update version.

Windows 11’s new features arriving in May

The software giant employs Controlled Feature Rollout (CFR) technology, allowing for a gradual introduction of these new improvements. As a result, users may experience a delay before all features become accessible.

1. Xbox mode gaming feature

With the May Patch Tuesday update, Microsoft is finally unveiling the Xbox mode for standard PCs, albeit initially in select markets. This feature transforms laptops, desktops, or tablets into a console-like experience via the Xbox app in full-screen mode. Once activated, the device automatically enters this mode upon restart and sign-in, presenting a controller-friendly interface akin to the Xbox dashboard. This allows users to launch and play games seamlessly, free from the usual distractions.

More than just an app auto-launch, Xbox mode prioritizes system resources to enhance gaming performance by minimizing background activity. According to Microsoft, this mode can liberate up to 2GB of memory for a smoother gaming experience.

4. Voice Typing improvements

The touch keyboard will see a redesign of its Voice Typing elements, eliminating the full-screen overlay and instead showcasing the Voice Typing animation directly on the dictation key.

5. Keyboard new layout

A new Arabic 101 Legacy keyboard layout will be introduced, available for addition from the Region page within the Settings app.

6. Drop Tray changes

In this update, the Drag Tray feature will be renamed to “Drop Tray,” with its location shifted to Settings > System > Multitasking. Users who find this feature disruptive can now disable it from the Multitasking page.

7. Taskbar new AI agents support

One of the most notable enhancements is the new capability to monitor AI agents directly from the Taskbar. For users whose systems support AI agents, this integration allows for real-time monitoring without needing to open the corresponding app. Initially, this feature will be available in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, where the Research agent can display live progress while generating reports.

8. Debloat policy with dynamic list support

The operating system has long included the “Remove Default Microsoft Store packages” policy; however, it now introduces a dynamic list option, enabling administrators to specify additional MSIX and APPX apps for removal. This enhancement grants organizations greater control over default applications beyond the standard list.

9. Windows Driver Policy update

May will also bring updates to how the kernel manages trust for third-party drivers. The default trust for cross-signed drivers will be eliminated, while drivers from the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP) and a selection of trusted legacy drivers will continue to be permitted. Notably, before enforcing these changes, the operating system will conduct compatibility tests for a minimum of 100 hours and three reboots, potentially blocking some cross-signed drivers.

10. Batch file security changes

This update will enhance security for batch files and Command Prompt scripts, reducing risks associated with runtime manipulation. Network administrators and Application Control for Business policy authors will have the option to enable a hardened processing mode for batch files, locking them during execution to prevent modifications. This can be configured through the Registry or enforced via the application manifest control.

11. Format FAT32 up to 2TB

Lastly, the format command-line tool will now support formatting volumes up to 2TB using FAT32, a significant increase from the previous limit of 32GB.

Windows Central’s Take

The May 2026 Windows 11 update strikes a commendable balance between practical upgrades and refined user experience. The introduction of Xbox mode stands out, as it effectively transforms a PC into a console when desired. Users will also appreciate the enhancements in File Explorer, consistent folder views, and expanded archive support, all contributing to a more intentional operating system. While not a flashy update, the cumulative effect of these improvements is noteworthy.
