Android Auto is poised for a significant upgrade in 2026, as Google unveils plans to enhance the platform with video applications, enriched audio capabilities, and advanced features powered by Gemini. This evolution promises to transform the in-car experience for users across various vehicle brands.
Video, but not while driving
The most notable addition is the support for Full HD video apps, which will operate at 60 frames per second in select vehicles. Initially, popular applications such as YouTube will be available, although specific vehicle models have yet to be disclosed. However, Google has indicated that early adopters will include renowned brands like BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo.
This feature will allow passengers to enjoy video content on the car’s display while parked. However, for safety reasons, the system will automatically switch to audio-only mode once the vehicle is in motion. While this ensures a safer driving experience, it may disappoint those hoping to catch a full podcast episode at a stoplight.
Better sound and bigger maps
In addition to video, audio enhancements are on the horizon. Android Auto will introduce Dolby Atmos support in select applications and vehicles, further elevating the listening experience for users of brands like BMW, Genesis, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Furthermore, media applications will benefit from a more flexible design, as showcased during Google I/O 2025, promising a more refined and adaptable interface for in-car entertainment.
The rollout of Google Maps Immersive Navigation is also set to continue, featuring a redesigned layout that utilizes edge-to-edge maps to maximize the vehicle’s display. For cars equipped with Google built-in, the integration of the front-facing camera will provide live lane guidance, complete with real-time lane recommendations.
Gemini gets into the cabin
Later this year, Gemini will make its debut in Android Auto, bringing contextual understanding and task completion capabilities to the assistant. One of the standout features, Magic Cue, will recognize addresses within Android Auto message notifications, facilitating seamless sharing. Additionally, voice interactions powered by Gemini will enable users to initiate orders through services like DoorDash directly from their vehicles.
Android Automotive vehicles will also see enhancements in media applications and audio-only modes, with a Zoom app for Android Auto expected to launch this year. While Google has yet to specify the exact rollout timeline for each feature, the overarching trend is clear: Android Auto is evolving to become more capable when parked, more polished during driving, and significantly smarter in between.
