Google adds Android app generation and Managed Agents to Gemini developer tools

At the recent I/O 2026 event, Google unveiled a suite of enhancements centered around its Gemini technology, introducing new developer tools within AI Studio and the Gemini API. These advancements include the ability to generate native Android applications and the introduction of managed agents that operate within isolated Linux environments.

Android app building in AI Studio

One of the standout features of Google AI Studio is its support for native Android app development directly from the build tab. Developers can now select the option to “Build an Android app” and utilize prompts to facilitate app generation. This streamlined workflow eliminates the need for local software installations or SDK management.

The Android app-building capability generates Kotlin code using Jetpack Compose patterns, with an initial focus on personal utility applications, straightforward social apps, and AI-powered applications that integrate with the Gemini API. Additionally, it supports hardware-enabled experiences by leveraging device features such as the camera and GPS.

The workflow is enhanced by an embedded Android Emulator, installation via Android Debug Bridge, and direct publishing options to an internal testing track within the Google Play Console. Google has confirmed that AI Studio can connect to a Google Play Developer account for internal testing purposes. However, it is important to note that apps generated through AI Studio must still adhere to Google Play’s quality and review standards, with no changes to the app review process being implemented.

Furthermore, AI Studio is being integrated with other Google services, allowing applications built within the platform to access Google Workspace data, including Sheets, Drive, and documents.

Google announces Antigravity 2.0

In addition to the AI Studio updates, Google introduced Antigravity 2.0, described as an agent-first development platform. This update features a revamped desktop application, a command-line interface, and an SDK designed for custom workflows. Projects created in AI Studio can be exported to Google Antigravity for local development, encompassing conversation history, project files, and secrets.

Moreover, Google Cloud customers will have the capability to connect to Antigravity for project development, further enhancing the platform’s versatility. The Managed Agents feature is powered by the Antigravity agent, which is designed to manage and deploy agents across AI Studio, Android, Firebase, and Google Cloud.

Managed Agents come to the Gemini API

The introduction of Managed Agents within the Gemini API allows developers to create an agent with a single API call. This agent is capable of reasoning, utilizing tools, and executing code within a secure, temporary Linux environment. Powered by Google’s Antigravity agent and built on Gemini 3.5 Flash, this feature is currently available in Public Preview through the Interactions API and Google AI Studio.

Google has emphasized that the Managed Agents feature simplifies infrastructure tasks for production-grade agents, including the setup of sandboxes and environment management. Each call to the Antigravity agent provisions a remote Linux environment where the agent can plan tasks, utilize tools, execute code, manage files, and browse the web for real-time information. Developers can maintain session continuity with follow-up calls, preserving files and state.

Custom agents can be defined by extending the Antigravity agent with personalized instructions and skills, which can be documented in markdown files such as AGENTS.md and SKILL.md. These can then be registered as managed agents. Google has highlighted its Deep Research initiative, introduced in December, as the first managed agent tailored for research tasks. The company is now opening its agent harness and infrastructure, inviting developers to create their own custom managed agents.
