The handheld gaming landscape continues to evolve, but the Windows 11 experience, particularly on devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X, remains a mixed bag. Microsoft has branded this device as a portable Xbox, yet users are discovering that the reality is more complex than the marketing suggests. The process of keeping the device updated is convoluted, requiring users to navigate through Xbox Mode, Asus’ Armory Crate, and Windows 11 itself. This trifecta can create confusion for those simply looking to enjoy their gaming experience without unnecessary complications.
Despite these challenges, it’s worth noting that Xbox Mode has seen significant improvements over recent months. New features have been introduced, such as the ability to integrate third-party launchers, including those from EA and Ubisoft, alongside emulation platforms like EmuDeck. The stability of Xbox Mode has also improved, making it a more reliable option than it was at launch. While the streamlined approach of Windows 11 is gradually enhancing the gaming experience, it still falls short of perfection. Personally, I find myself relying heavily on Xbox Mode, often bypassing the full Windows 11 interface altogether, which is a testament to the progress made.
Xbox Mode has caught up with Winhanced in a lot of ways
Enter Winhanced, a third-party launcher designed specifically for Windows 11 handhelds. This application promises a unified platform for accessing various game stores and apps, and it can also be utilized on standard Windows 11 PCs. The buzz surrounding Winhanced piqued my interest, prompting me to explore its capabilities. On paper, it appears to offer a compelling alternative.
I appreciate the app’s more unique features, but Xbox Mode is more stable
Winhanced boasts a sleek and customizable user interface that, in many respects, surpasses both Xbox Mode and Armory Crate. It allows users to launch cloud games from platforms like GeForce Now and Xbox Game Streaming, while also providing a technical overlay for the Xbox Game Bar Widget. This overlay facilitates access to features such as automatic TDP adjustment, frame capping, and resolution scaling. Recent updates have even introduced direct emulator support for Patreon supporters, enhancing its appeal for retro gaming enthusiasts.
However, after spending several days with Winhanced, I hesitate to recommend it as a primary alternative to Xbox Mode. While the setup process is largely user-friendly, I encountered issues with the app’s ability to automatically source artwork for added games. Although manual image uploads are possible, they require additional time and effort—something that can be a deterrent for busy gamers. In contrast, Xbox Mode efficiently populates titles with eye-catching images during setup, streamlining the user experience.
To fully leverage Winhanced’s sleep/wake feature, users must adjust their device settings to prioritize Sleep over Hibernate. This feature has proven effective, reportedly saving battery life by up to 80 percent while in sleep mode. My experience aligns with this claim, as I found the sleep functionality to be superior to the standard Windows 11 options. For those wishing to make Winhanced their primary launcher, navigating to Settings > Gaming > Choose Home App allows for setting it as the default application upon startup.
Yet, my primary concern lies with the app’s reliability. During my usage, I faced multiple instances where Winhanced became unresponsive, necessitating a restart of my handheld. Given the importance of reliability in handheld gaming, this issue has led me to conclude that Winhanced cannot yet replace Xbox Mode as my go-to launcher.
For a front-end made by a small team, Winhanced is still impressive
Despite its shortcomings, Winhanced is not without merit. The HUD accessible through the Game Bar provides straightforward access to power profiles, TDP settings, display refresh rates, and more—all features that are also available through Xbox Mode, Armory Crate, and AMD’s Windows 11 app. However, having them consolidated in one location enhances usability. The ability to update the ROG Xbox Ally X’s drivers directly through Winhanced adds to its utility, although other updates still require their respective applications.
Considering that Winhanced is developed by a small team rather than a corporate giant like Microsoft, its achievements are commendable. The app has shown considerable improvement in a short time. However, I often see it touted as the ultimate launcher by various online communities and tech influencers. Based on my experience, it still has a way to go before it can claim that title. I remain optimistic about Winhanced’s potential and look forward to its evolution, but for now, I will continue to rely on Xbox Mode for my handheld gaming needs.
