Star Citizen’s single-player component is in the ‘closing stages’ of development according to Chris Roberts, as rumours of another Squadron 42 delay circulate

Last week, Star Citizen achieved a remarkable milestone, surpassing billion in player funding. This significant achievement has reignited discussions surrounding Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitious space MMO, prompting questions that have lingered since its inception. Is it a scam? The answer remains a resounding no. Is it playable? Yes, indeed. However, the timeline for its completion continues to elude clarity.

Squadron 42’s Development Status

One of the most pressing inquiries pertains to the status of the single-player component, Squadron 42. Initially slated for release this year, the game has faced numerous delays, making it challenging for fans to take the timeline seriously. Yet, recent comments from Chris Roberts, the creator of Star Citizen, suggest that Squadron 42 may be nearing completion. In a recent interview during Star Citizen’s DefenseCon event, Roberts indicated that the game is “in the closing stages” of development.

Roberts elaborated on the vision for Squadron 42, describing it as an “authored” single-player campaign that leverages the technology developed for Star Citizen. This ambitious project has generated considerable excitement, but it is not without its uncertainties.

Much of the speculation surrounding Squadron 42’s progress has been fueled by insights from YouTuber and Star Citizen expert TheAstroPub. In his latest video, he revealed that he has been in contact with several anonymous developers who have provided intermittent updates over the years. According to these sources, Squadron 42 entered “some sort of beta” phase earlier this year, around February or March.

However, concerns about the game’s performance at launch have surfaced. When TheAstroPub inquired whether these issues could be resolved in time for a potential October release, the feedback was unexpected. Sources indicated that the release would not occur in October but rather in 2027, with a specific date mentioned that TheAstroPub chose not to disclose to protect his sources.

Adding to the intrigue, TheAstroPub suggested that Squadron 42 might make an appearance at this year’s Summer Games Fest. His theory stems from a message on a Spanish streamer’s Twitch channel, allegedly from a senior game designer at Star Citizen, hinting at participation in the event. While the evidence remains tenuous, the notion that Squadron 42 could be showcased at such a prominent event seems plausible. Given Roberts’ recent discussions about ramping up marketing efforts, the anticipation surrounding the game continues to build.

As the gaming community watches closely, the prospect of both a release date announcement and potential delays looms large, with many speculating that a specific launch date in 2027 may soon be revealed.
