Continuing my exploration of contemporary antivirus solutions, I dedicated the past month and a half to Norton Antivirus, a stalwart in the cybersecurity realm, to assess its standing in today’s market. The findings present a nuanced picture, revealing both strengths and weaknesses.
Antivirus Efficacy
Norton Antivirus excels as a malware protection tool, consistently ranking among the top contenders in the industry. It boasts a robust suite of security features that enhance its effectiveness. However, the experience is somewhat marred by intrusive upselling tactics that detract from its overall usability. While these elements did not compel me to uninstall the software, they did cast a shadow over an otherwise commendable antivirus solution.
User Interface and Navigation
The layout of Norton Antivirus is reminiscent of Malwarebytes, featuring a Home tab that serves as a central dashboard for monitoring your computer’s health. The interface is organized and user-friendly, with additional categories conveniently positioned along the left side. For instance, during my use, Norton flagged over 166GB of junk files that were impacting the performance of 30 applications. However, clicking through to resolve these issues often led to promotional pages for Norton Utilities Ultimate, a separate subscription service that requires an additional fee after a 60-day trial. This upselling approach was not only unwelcome but also disappointing, particularly for a premium security suite.
Comprehensive Scanning Tools
Norton’s scanning capabilities stand out as one of its most impressive features. It offers a variety of scanning options, including Quick Scan, Full Scan, and Smart Scan, which evaluates your system for privacy and performance concerns. The Targeted Scan allows for examination of specific files and folders, while the Startup Scan is particularly noteworthy; it detects hidden malware that may evade conventional scans. In my testing, this feature successfully identified a Trojan that had gone undetected by both Windows Defender and Malwarebytes.
Additionally, the Scam Protection tools effectively thwarted online scams and phishing attempts, providing timely alerts when I was about to access potentially harmful websites. Among its unique offerings is Deepfake Protection, which assesses audio and video content for alterations or AI-generated manipulations. Norton also includes an AI assistant named Genie, which proved reliable in analyzing suspicious emails and links, accurately identifying scams based on my submissions.
Performance Metrics
In terms of effectiveness, Norton Antivirus demonstrated its prowess by successfully blocking numerous malicious files that bypassed my browser and ISP defenses. However, to gain a clearer perspective, I consulted data from MRG Effitas, a respected cybersecurity testing organization. Their June 2026 Consumer Assessment report indicated that Norton blocked 98% of malware samples, achieving a Level 2 certification. While this is commendable, it did have a 0.33% malware miss rate, allowing a few threats to slip through, which placed it slightly behind competitors like Malwarebytes.
Pricing and Plans
Norton Antivirus offers several personal plans, with Norton 360 Deluxe presenting the best overall value at an introductory price of for the first year, subsequently rising to 5 annually. The Standard plan starts at for the first year and increases to , while the Select Plus plan is priced at 0 initially, escalating to 0 thereafter.
Despite its advantages, I find it challenging to recommend Norton over Malwarebytes due to the intrusive nature of its paywalled features. The persistent upselling detracts from the user experience, whereas Malwarebytes’ paywalls feel less obtrusive. Nonetheless, Norton does possess unique strengths, particularly its ability to detect threats that other programs may overlook, thanks to its Startup Scan feature. It also offers a comprehensive suite of security tools, including a privacy-focused browser, password manager, cloud backup, and an intuitive startup manager, making it a compelling option for those seeking an all-in-one security package.
