Console-exclusive Silent Hill game finally gets PC release 14 years later

A significant development in the gaming world has emerged as Aleksey Shevchenko, a Russian developer, has unveiled a trailer for an unofficial PC port of Silent Hill Downpour. Originally launched in 2012 exclusively for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this title is now poised to make its debut on PC, 14 years after its initial release.

Silent Hill Downpour will finally be preserved thanks to this unofficial PC port

Shevchenko’s approach to this project is particularly noteworthy. Unlike many modern unofficial PC ports that rely on recompilation, he has meticulously transferred all content from the original console version to create a native PC experience. This dedication promises to enhance the gameplay while preserving the essence of the original title.

The trailer highlights several exciting features that players can expect in the PC version. Among these enhancements are increased resolutions reaching up to 1440p and support for 60 frames per second. These upgrades are set to significantly elevate the visual experience, complemented by improved lighting and shadow effects that amplify the game’s eerie atmosphere.

In addition to graphical improvements, Shevchenko has ensured that the port caters to a variety of play styles. While controller support is a given, the inclusion of keyboard and mouse controls offers flexibility for players who prefer traditional PC gaming setups. Furthermore, technical enhancements such as quick-save and quick-load options, along with the ability to skip cutscenes, are designed to streamline the gaming experience.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this port is the restoration of previously cut content. Players can look forward to a treasure trove of deleted cutscenes, dialogues, notes, quests, 3D models, and weapons. Additionally, a teased deleted boss fight promises to add a fresh twist for both newcomers and returning fans alike.

While Shevchenko has not yet provided a specific release date, he has indicated on Reddit that the port is expected to launch in the autumn. This timeline allows him to refine the game further and address any potential bugs that may surface during development. As with other unofficial PC ports, players will need to own the original software to access this version, ensuring that the port can verify ownership and utilize the necessary assets.

Upon its original release, Silent Hill Downpour received a mixed reception, with critiques aimed at its combat mechanics and technical issues. However, players praised the depth of its characters and storytelling, elements that remain central to the franchise’s appeal. This forthcoming native PC version follows closely on the heels of another unofficial port of Silent Hill 1, which was revealed earlier this year, further solidifying the availability of the Silent Hill series on PC, with the exception of Silent Hill: The Short Message and Silent Hill: Origins.
