The Significance of Windows on Arm

The emergence of Windows on Arm is capturing attention for several compelling reasons. At the forefront is the energy efficiency of Arm chips, which promise extended battery life while consuming less power, generating minimal heat, and operating with a whisper-like quietness. However, the journey toward widespread adoption has faced a significant obstacle: compatibility. The majority of applications are tailored for x86/x64 systems, leaving Arm-based systems struggling to run them effectively. Additionally, many hardware accessories lack the necessary Arm-compatible drivers.

This recent announcement marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of Windows on Arm. As the catalog of Arm-compatible applications and games expands, the arguments against this architecture begin to lose their weight. With a growing number of compatible offerings, we are approaching a critical mass that will allow users to fully leverage the advantages of Arm-based systems, minimizing the downsides that have historically hindered their adoption.

One notable resource in this landscape is the website “Works on Windows on Arm,” which meticulously lists over 7,000 apps and games that now support Arm architecture. Among these are renowned applications such as 1Password, Adobe Photoshop, Blender, Davinci Resolve, Firefox, GIMP, Libre Office, Signal, Spotify, and VLC, to name just a few.

Microsoft’s milestone announcement aims to generate excitement for the upcoming fall launch of Arm-based computers from major manufacturers including Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI. While the achievement of over 7,000 compatible apps is commendable, it is essential to recognize that this figure remains a mere fraction of the vast array of applications available for traditional Windows x86/x64 systems.

For applications and games that do not yet offer native Arm compatibility, Microsoft provides an emulation solution through Prism, an integrated emulation layer in Windows 11 that enables x86/x64 applications to run on Arm devices. However, it is important to note that this emulation does not match the performance of native support, leading to increased power consumption and reduced efficiency—an ironic twist given that energy savings are one of Arm’s primary selling points.

This situation leaves gamers in a challenging position. In 2024, we advised against opting for a Snapdragon laptop for gaming, and the landscape has not significantly improved since then. The latest Snapdragon X2 still struggles to deliver a smooth gaming experience. While there is hope that advancements such as Nvidia’s RTX Spark could catalyze progress in this area, the current offering of over 7,000 apps alone does not suffice to meet the needs of the gaming community.
