20 million sales later, Capcom is bringing Monster Hunter Rise to iOS and Android, but for now it’s locked behind a Netflix subscription

Monster Hunter Rise Coming to Android and iOS via Netflix

Monster Hunter Rise, originally launched on Nintendo Switch in 2021 and later expanded to PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, is now making its way to Android and iOS through Netflix, as revealed by new store listings today. The game, which I personally found to be superb even in its most basic release state, seems to have received a ‘soft launch’ on both Apple and Android storefronts.

The store pages indicate that a Netflix Membership is required to download and play the game, which will be stored and run natively on mobile devices. Capcom’s ability to scale the game from Switch to PS5 in the past five years makes the transition to mobile hardware a logical next step for the publisher, showcasing their impressive capabilities.

Minor Differences in Mobile Version

  • Challenge and Event Quests previously available as paid or temporary downloadable content can now be unlocked as you progress through the game.
  • A new Recovery Button automatically selects the most effective item from your inventory during a fight, allowing players to focus on more critical decisions in the heat of battle.
  • Reconstructed touch controls are designed to work intuitively on smartphone and tablet screens, adapting to each weapon’s unique control scheme. Visuals are optimized for various screen sizes and ratios on supported devices.

I am personally intrigued to try out the touch controls on a full Monster Hunter game when it officially launches. The timing of this mobile release coinciding with Tencent’s Monster Hunter Outlanders launch on October 29th adds an interesting dynamic to the mobile gaming landscape.

Capcom’s decision to add Monster Hunter Rise to Netflix’s game streaming catalogue raises questions about potential future collaborations and the impact on the game’s popularity. With Rise reaching 20 million units sold worldwide, it seems like a strategic move for the publisher. Will we see more Capcom titles, like Phoenix Wright, making their way to Netflix in the future?

As Rise continues to gain momentum and compete with other Monster Hunter titles like World and Wilds, it will be interesting to see how the mobile version and upcoming DLC will further shape the franchise’s success.
