Analysts say PC gaming is now the one platform where more than 50% of revenue comes from games outside the top 20

Shifting Dynamics in PC Gaming Revenue

According to Newzoo’s latest PC & Console Gaming Report for 2026, the landscape of gaming revenue is evolving, particularly within the PC segment. The report reveals a notable trend: the long tail of game titles is expanding, with a significant increase in revenue generated from games ranked 21 and below. In Western markets, this segment has surged from 48% to 56% in 2025, indicating that more than half of PC revenue now stems from titles outside the Top 20.

This growth is not merely in the number of games purchased; it also reflects a shift in player engagement. The report notes a remarkable 44% increase in playtime for these lower-ranked games, while overall PC playtime rose by 14%. In contrast, playtime for the Top 20 titles has remained relatively stagnant or even declined slightly.

Games like Elden Ring and Skyrim continue to capture attention, but the report highlights a burgeoning interest in survival games and action RPGs. Titles such as Rust, DayZ, and Path of Exile 2 are thriving due to ongoing support, regular updates, and balanced gameplay, which keep players engaged over extended periods.

Reflecting on the evolution of the gaming market, the report also touches on the nostalgic appeal of retro gaming. As noted by industry veteran Wired, the resurgence of classic game simulators on modern PCs is driven by the nostalgia of early gamers. While titles like Skyrim and DayZ may now be considered retro, newer games are also maintaining their relevance longer than previously observed. Newzoo cites titles such as REPO and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as examples of games that continue to sell well, even after slipping from bestseller lists.

This shift indicates a broader audience eager to explore games that may have been popular a year or so ago, rather than solely focusing on the latest releases. As Tianyi Gu, Newzoo’s manager of market analysis, aptly states, “On PC, the space below the Top 20 is becoming more economically meaningful. That doesn’t make the market unconcentrated, but it does make games below the very top more commercially relevant than before.”
