My 2026 New Year’s resolution is to finally play these 8 Xbox and PC games in my backlog — mostly because new releases are getting too expensive

December 21, 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, anticipation for the gaming landscape of 2026 begins to build. While discussions often revolve around the latest Xbox titles, a deeper reflection reveals a trend: the rising costs of new games and their frequent launches in less-than-ideal conditions, necessitating extensive patches post-release. A notable example is Monster Hunter Wilds, which has sparked conversations about the quality of game releases.

My journey into the world of CRPGs began unexpectedly with Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, a game that captivated me and opened my eyes to the genre. Now, I find myself eager to explore more titles, particularly the acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin series. The recent dark and grand reveal of the next installment at The Game Awards 2025 has only heightened my interest.

Divinity: Original Sin Series

The first two games in the Divinity: Original Sin series are celebrated for their intricate turn-based combat and rich storytelling set in the fantasy realm of Rivellon. Players embark on epic quests to thwart the plans of evil mages and otherworldly horrors. The original game, released in 2014, was lauded for its innovative combat mechanics, which encouraged players to creatively manipulate the environment—think using water to conduct electricity during battles. It also introduced complex moral choices that could drastically alter the narrative, alongside a co-op mode that added a playful twist with Rock-Paper-Scissors style decision-making.

Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows, Steam, or GOG.

The sequel, Divinity: Original Sin 2, launched in 2017, built upon its predecessor’s foundation, introducing a wealth of new features and setting the stage for Larian Studios’ later success with Baldur’s Gate 3. Players can choose from six unique Origin characters or create their own, each with distinct backstories and quests. The game offers unparalleled freedom in player choices, allowing for a dynamic experience where characters can face dire consequences for their actions. The recent upgrade for Xbox Series X|S enhances the experience further, providing smoother gameplay for new and returning players alike.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows, Steam, or GOG.

Baldur’s Gate 3

Despite its acclaim, I have yet to experience Baldur’s Gate 3. My hesitation stemmed from its lengthy early access phase and the subsequent updates that transformed the game significantly. However, with Larian Studios now focusing on new projects and the availability of numerous mods, the time has come for me to dive into this celebrated title. Set in the iconic Baldur’s Gate universe, players navigate a gripping narrative filled with peril as they contend with the Illithid, a race of terrifying creatures, while racing against time to remove a parasitic threat.

This game has garnered numerous accolades, including a perfect score from reviewers and multiple awards at the BAFTAs and The Game Awards 2023, thanks to its intricate storytelling and engaging gameplay that faithfully adapts the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition ruleset.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows, Steam, or GOG.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

While I await Owlcat Games’ upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, I plan to explore Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. This title immerses players in a world besieged by demons, challenging them to either lead a crusade against the forces of darkness or succumb to temptation for personal gain. The game boasts extensive character customization, a flexible combat system, and a narrative rich with choices that can lead to wildly different outcomes.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows, Steam, or GOG.

The Hollow Knight Series

Another series I have yet to explore is The Hollow Knight. Despite my affinity for Metroidvanias and Soulslike games, I missed the original due to my obsession with Monster Hunter: World. With the upcoming release of Hollow Knight: Silksong and its free DLC expansion, I feel compelled to finally experience the beautifully crafted world and challenging gameplay that has garnered such a passionate fanbase.

Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong are available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows, Steam, and GOG.

Ninja Gaiden Series

As a child, I shied away from the notorious difficulty of the Ninja Gaiden series. However, my newfound patience and skill as a gamer have inspired me to confront my childhood fears. The franchise, known for its intense combat and challenging gameplay, has evolved since its inception in the 1980s, and I look forward to experiencing the thrill of mastering Ryu Hayabusa’s journey.

Ninja Gaiden games are available on PlayStation and PC via Steam, with older titles also accessible on Windows.

Control

Another title that piqued my interest is Control, especially with the announcement of its sequel, Control: Resonant. As someone unfamiliar with Remedy’s previous works, I am intrigued by the surreal visuals and unique gameplay mechanics showcased in the trailer. The original game follows Jesse Faden as she navigates a secretive organization plagued by supernatural events, and I am eager to uncover its mysteries in 2026.

Control is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows and Steam.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Series

Despite my passion for the Warhammer 40,000 universe, I have yet to play the Space Marine series. My initial reluctance stemmed from the focus on the Ultramarines, a faction I didn’t find particularly compelling. However, after watching their portrayal in the Secret Level short film, I am motivated to explore both Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and its sequel, especially with the remastered version of the original now available.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Re-Crafted and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC via Windows and Steam.

Age of Mythology: Retold

Lastly, I am excited about the remaster of Age of Mythology, which promises to rekindle fond memories of my childhood spent playing real-time strategy games. The remastered version will feature enhanced graphics and quality-of-life improvements, allowing me to revisit the adventures of Arkantos and his mythical battles.

Age of Mythology: Retold is available on Xbox and PC via Windows and Steam.

As I reflect on my gaming backlog, I am eager to explore these titles in 2026. What games are you looking forward to diving into next year?
