PlayStation Reportedly Tells Developers That It Is Returning to Console Exclusives for Single-Player Games

In a notable shift in strategy, PlayStation appears to be retreating from its previous approach to PC gaming, particularly concerning its single-player titles. Earlier this year, reports from Bloomberg hinted at this change, suggesting that the company would limit future first-party game releases on PC. The uncertainty surrounding this decision was palpable, as developers like Housemarque, known for their work on Saros, sidestepped inquiries about potential PC launches during promotional interviews.

Clarification from Leadership

Recent developments have brought clarity to the situation. During a town hall meeting, Hermen Hulst, CEO of PlayStation Studios, confirmed that narrative-driven single-player games will now be exclusive to PlayStation consoles. This announcement indicates that titles such as Ghost of Yotei, Saros, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and Marvel’s Wolverine will not be making their way to PC. For gamers eager to experience these upcoming releases, acquiring a PS5 will be essential.

Interestingly, Hulst’s emphasis on single-player games suggests that multiplayer-focused titles, such as the anticipated Fairgames, may still find their way to PC. This could be a strategic move, especially considering the success of Helldivers 2 on the platform, which has garnered impressive player numbers.

Reflecting on Past Strategies

Over the past six years, PlayStation has gradually introduced some of its most celebrated titles to PC, including the acclaimed God of War series, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us. These games typically launched on PC months or even years after their initial console releases, a tactic that allowed the company to capitalize on additional revenue from players who might not transition to PlayStation.

However, the effectiveness of this strategy has come into question. For instance, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 achieved a peak of only 28,117 concurrent players on Steam, a figure that pales in comparison to the 458,208 concurrent players for Helldivers 2. The latter benefited from a simultaneous release on both PC and PS5, highlighting the potential advantages of a dual-launch strategy.

Insights from Industry Experts

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has expressed skepticism regarding the decision to pull back on PC releases. He noted that the additional revenue generated from launching games on PC after a delay likely contributed to recouping the substantial investments required for high-budget titles. Yoshida remarked, “If they were releasing new AAA games day one on other platforms, I don’t think that’s a good strategy for a platform holder like PlayStation.” He further emphasized the importance of maintaining investment in first-party games, suggesting that any strategic shifts could have significant implications for the company moving forward.

Meanwhile, Xbox is also reevaluating its exclusivity strategy. Under the new leadership of Asha Sharma, there is ongoing speculation about whether Xbox will continue to release its games on PlayStation platforms. Currently, titles like Fable and Forza Horizon 6 are confirmed for PS5, with expectations of simultaneous launches across Xbox and PlayStation.
