Rise of the Ronin’s PC troubles continue as players report disappearing saves on Steam

Reports have emerged from players of Rise of the Ronin, following its recent Steam release, indicating a troubling trend: lost save data. This unfortunate development compounds the game’s already rocky debut on PC, which has been marred by performance issues.

Investigation Underway

Koei Tecmo addressed the situation on Monday, acknowledging the concerns and stating, “We are currently looking into and investigating reported save data issues for Rise of the Ronin Steam edition.” In their blog post, the company outlined several potential remedies, which include:

  • Resolving conflicts with third-party file sharing services, such as Dropbox.
  • Restoring from backup save data.
  • Ensuring that Steam Cloud is activated.

Additionally, Koei Tecmo has directed players to their customer support page, which provides further troubleshooting steps. However, the company is still delving into the root cause of the problem.

Players are reporting significant losses, with some claiming they have lost hours of progress due to an error code that appears upon closing the game, resulting in wiped save files. Alarmingly, this issue seems to affect local, manual saves as well, suggesting a broader malfunction rather than a mere glitch with cloud saves. The exact nature of the problem—whether it stems from Steam Cloud or an error on Koei Tecmo’s end—remains uncertain, but the implications are concerning, especially given the existing performance challenges faced by the PC port.

Performance Concerns

Koei Tecmo has pledged to release a patch aimed at enhancing PC performance. In the meantime, they recommend that players cap their frame rate at 60 FPS to alleviate graphical issues. This recommendation has disappointed many, particularly since the company previously promoted the game’s capability for 8K resolution and 120 FPS on PC. Players have expressed frustration over experiencing visuals reminiscent of PS4-level graphics that struggle to maintain a stable frame rate, even on high-end systems.

As noted by Joe Donnelly, a reviewer for PC Gamer, “Don’t get me wrong, I love a rambling systems-heavy open-world action RPG romp as much as the next guy. […] What I’m less into is unpredictable performance issues. I’m far less enamoured by FPS counts that shuttle between single and triple digits faster than a round of Family Feud.”

The unexpected deletion of save files is the last hurdle that Rise of the Ronin needs at this juncture. Players are advised to save their progress frequently and verify that their save files are being properly backed up in Steam Cloud, in order to mitigate the risk of losing significant gameplay time to this ongoing issue.
