The legal landscape surrounding online gaming platforms continues to evolve, as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has taken a decisive step by filing a lawsuit against Roblox. The suit alleges that the company has “flagrantly ignored state and federal online safety laws while deceiving parents about the dangers of its platform.” In response, Roblox has firmly rejected these claims, characterizing the lawsuit as “based on misrepresentations and sensationalized claims.”
Concerns Over Child Safety
In a press release, Paxton expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of children on the platform, stating, “We cannot allow platforms like Roblox to continue operating as digital playgrounds for predators where the well-being of our kids is sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed.” He emphasized the need for Roblox to enhance its protective measures against potential threats, asserting that “any corporation that enables child abuse will face the full and unrelenting force of the law.”
The lawsuit claims that Roblox has marketed itself as the “world’s safest and most family-friendly online gaming platform for kids,” while, in reality, it is described as “a sprawling and unregulated digital playground that is overrun by predators and saturated with sexual content.” Additionally, it accuses the platform of promoting “compulsive purchases” through its in-game currency, Robux, which the lawsuit argues makes it easier for predators to target children.
Further complicating matters, the lawsuit references similar legal actions from Louisiana and Kentucky, as well as a criminal investigation initiated by the state of Florida. These cases reportedly share common themes, including disturbing imagery from various Roblox “experiences” that feature inappropriate content.

Roblox’s Response and Safety Measures
In light of these allegations, Roblox recently released a “Safety Snapshot” update, outlining its ongoing efforts to enhance safety protocols. The update highlighted initiatives such as open-sourcing a version of its Roblox PII Classifier, which aims to improve the detection and blocking of violations related to personally identifiable information (PII). Furthermore, Roblox has modified its approach to handling user-reported incidents of abuse.
Roblox also noted its collaborations with various stakeholders, including the Partnership for Youth Online Safety, which was recently established with the Attorney General Alliance. This partnership was praised in October for its commitment to addressing community concerns.
A spokesperson for Roblox reiterated the company’s dedication to child safety, stating, “We share Attorney General Paxton’s commitment to keeping kids and teens safe online, which is why we have implemented industry-leading protocols in an effort to protect users and remove bad actors.” The spokesperson expressed disappointment that the Attorney General opted for litigation rather than collaboration, emphasizing Roblox’s proactive measures to ensure a safe online environment.
Roblox maintains that its policies are more stringent than those of many other platforms, highlighting restrictions on sharing images and videos in chat, the use of filters to block personal information, and continuous monitoring of communications to detect harmful content. The company asserts its commitment to working with law enforcement and investing in advanced safety systems to set a high standard for online safety in the industry.
