The PUBG extraction shooter spinoff springs back to life with a closed alpha test set for December, and its focus on exploration over pure combat sounds a lot like my favorite part of Arc Raiders

Reviving Interest in PUBG: Black Budget

In 2023, the gaming community was introduced to an intriguing concept known as Project Black Budget, a spinoff from the popular PUBG franchise designed as an extraction shooter. Initially slated for a release in the latter half of 2024, the project seemed to fade from memory as the year progressed without any updates. However, as we approach the close of 2025, excitement is rekindled with the official announcement of PUBG: Black Budget, which is set to embark on its closed alpha testing phase this December.

The allure of extraction shooters has recently gained traction, particularly with titles like Arc Raiders, which have showcased a more collaborative gameplay experience than one might expect. PUBG: Black Budget aims to tap into this cooperative dynamic, promising a fresh take on the genre that emphasizes teamwork over sheer firepower.

The closed alpha test will be accessible to players across North America, Europe, and Asia, with two testing sessions scheduled from December 12-14 and December 19-21. Interested players can secure their chance to participate by visiting the game’s Steam page and clicking the “request access” button. However, it’s important to note that the number of testers may be limited, and not everyone who applies is guaranteed entry.

PUBG Studios has been candid about the potential challenges that may arise during this alpha phase, acknowledging that participants might encounter various technical issues. Yet, in a refreshing departure from typical testing protocols, there is no non-disclosure agreement (NDA) attached to these sessions. This means that players fortunate enough to gain access can freely stream, capture, and share their gameplay experiences, fostering a sense of community engagement and feedback.

Access keys will also be distributed through Twitch Drops during the testing period, further encouraging interaction among players and streamers alike. PUBG Studios has expressed that this open format is intended to refine gameplay systems and performance ahead of subsequent testing phases, setting it apart from other upcoming titles, such as Bungie’s Marathon, which will operate under a strict NDA.
