Valve Releases Proton 11 Beta for Windows Gaming on Android
Valve, the creator of Steam, has been a key player in the distribution of PC games for over two decades, primarily for Windows users. Recently, the company has been expanding its support to other platforms, including Linux and Arm-based architecture. This effort has not only benefited Valve’s own hardware but has also improved gaming options for other platforms, particularly Android.
The latest update to the Proton compatibility layer, version 11 (beta), allows for the emulation of Windows apps and games on Linux. With this update, popular Windows games like Resident Evil titles are now playable on Android devices through Proton. The update details have been made available on GitHub.
Proton 11 beta is based on the latest version of Wine, a Windows app emulator for Linux, which added support for NTSync to enhance performance when running Windows games on Linux. This update brings support for various titles, including Universe Generator, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, and more.
Valve has also introduced a Proton 11 profile for ARM64 devices, enabling games designed for x86 hardware to be emulated on devices with Arm chips, such as Android phones, tablets, and gaming handhelds. Additionally, reports indicate that the update has enabled Steam to run on unofficially supported devices like the Nintendo Switch.
With these advancements, Valve is not only improving gaming experiences for Android users but also expanding the possibilities for Windows gaming on a variety of devices.
