World War 1 survival horror Conscript gets a ‘huge’ update that adds a hardcore mode, redesigned levels, new items and gear, and much more

World War I survival horror title Conscript emerged as a standout surprise last year, captivating audiences with its raw portrayal of a French soldier’s harrowing journey through the Battle of Verdun. Reviewer Alexander Chatziioannou lauded the game for its meticulous craftsmanship, stating, “Every aspect of the game feels meticulously crafted to convey the absurdity and depravity of war.” His review culminated in a commendable score of 83, yet developer Jordan Mochi felt there was room for improvement beyond the initial launch in July.

Significant Updates and Enhancements

In response to player feedback, Mochi has embarked on a substantial update, rebranding the game as Conscript: Director’s Cut. This update promises to refine numerous elements of the gameplay experience. Notably, players will now encounter a variety of new items during their exploration of the trenches. Among these is a craftsman’s kit, which enhances the amount of ammunition players can craft, and intriguingly, a dog collar that prevents rats from spawning when held in the inventory. While the magical quality of this item initially raised eyebrows, it draws inspiration from historical practices where dogs served as effective rat-catchers for the French and other armies during the war, enriching the game’s authenticity.

Moreover, Mochi has made significant adjustments to the combat system, addressing previous frustrations. Enhancements include the ability to move while aiming, a stagger effect for shotgun blasts, and improved knockback for melee attacks. The level design has also seen a revamp, introducing new shortcuts to facilitate smoother progression throughout the game.

In addition to these major changes, a host of smaller updates have been implemented. These include tweaks to the late-game economy, the introduction of placeable map markers for item tracking, an improved records screen, and more. Mochi expressed his satisfaction with the update, stating, “I’d consider this to be the version of the game I’d have released if I had a bit more time to playtest the game thoroughly myself before launch with no pressure and stress.”

To commemorate the release of the Director’s Cut, publisher Team 17 is offering a generous 66% discount on Conscript, reducing the price to $/£6.79. This promotion has piqued interest, prompting many, including myself, to seize the opportunity to experience the game during the holiday season. One can’t help but wonder if navigating the grim realities of World War I will provide a fitting backdrop for festive gaming. A report on this experience may well emerge in 2026.
