Zoho has recently found itself at the center of attention with its instant messaging application, ‘Arattai,’ which is being hailed as a potential alternative to WhatsApp. This surge in interest follows an endorsement from Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who highlighted the importance of promoting locally developed products and services in India. The response has been remarkable, with daily sign-ups skyrocketing from 3,000 to an astounding 350,000 within just 72 hours of going viral. Jeri John, the Global Product Head at Arattai, confirmed that the platform has now surpassed 1 million monthly active users.
Surge in Popularity
The majority of new users are emerging from India, where the initial wave of interest began, although there is also growing registration from international users. In light of this unexpected influx, Zoho is actively enhancing its infrastructure to accommodate the increased demand. However, some users have reported issues, such as delays in receiving OTPs.
In response to the rapid growth, Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu stated that the company is urgently expanding its infrastructure to prepare for a potential further surge. “As we added a lot more infrastructure, we are also fine-tuning and updating the code to fix issues as they arise. We have all-hands-on-deck working flat out,” Vembu remarked. He also mentioned that a significant launch was planned for November, but the sudden spike in interest has altered their timeline. Additionally, he has initiated discussions with Sharad Sharma from iSpirt to standardize and publish messaging protocols, aiming for interoperability akin to UPI and email.
Historical Context
Arattai’s roots can be traced back to Zoho Chat, which was launched in 2006 and later evolved into Zoho Cliq, a business communication platform. John explained that the inspiration for a consumer-focused messaging app stemmed from their prior experiences in B2B communication. “We wanted to create a product built in India that reflects the country’s unique needs, from linguistic diversity to accessibility,” he noted.
Historically, Zoho Chat emerged at a time when high-speed mobile internet was not yet prevalent in India, and messaging was primarily conducted through desktop platforms. The landscape has since shifted dramatically with the rise of WhatsApp, which has become the dominant player in the Indian market, boasting over 850 million users.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the initial success, Arattai faces significant challenges. The experience of other local social media platforms, such as Koo and Hike Messenger, serves as a cautionary tale. Both platforms experienced initial popularity but struggled to maintain their user bases once the initial excitement waned. Koo, for instance, peaked at 2.1 million daily active users but later faced operational challenges and ultimately shut down.
Industry experts highlight that merely being an Indian product is not sufficient to retain users in the face of established competitors like WhatsApp. Rohit Krishna, General Partner at WEH Ventures, emphasized that social networks are inherently difficult to build due to the strong network effects of existing platforms. “It’s harder to build a substitute to a utility like WhatsApp unless there’s a clear advantage,” he stated.
Future Developments
As Arattai continues to grow, it must prioritize user feedback and infrastructure improvements. John mentioned that the company is mobilizing cross-functional teams to address issues in real-time, focusing on enhancing user experience and scalability. One of the key features on the horizon is the implementation of end-to-end encryption, which is crucial for user privacy.
While there are concerns about potential monetization strategies, John reassured users that advertising is not part of their roadmap. “Our focus is on building trust, privacy, scale, and product reliability. Being a privately held, profitable company allows us to take that long view,” he explained.
Unlike previous attempts to establish a social media app, Arattai benefits from Zoho’s established reputation in the global SaaS market. With the right blend of unique features and a commitment to user privacy, Arattai may carve out its niche in the competitive messaging landscape, making it a development to watch closely.
