Meta’s Threads app to test direct messaging in some countries

Meta Platforms has announced the upcoming rollout of direct messaging on its Threads app, a feature that has been a staple for its competitors. This strategic move aims to enhance user engagement and attract a broader audience. Initially, users in select markets, including Hong Kong and Thailand, will gain access to a dedicated inbox for direct messages, streamlining communication without the need to transition to Instagram’s messaging platform, as stated by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

While the introduction of direct messaging is a significant step, it is important to note that messages on Threads will not be encrypted at this stage. This decision reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to refine its offerings while navigating the competitive landscape of social media.

Strategic Integration with Instagram

The integration of Threads and Instagram is part of Meta’s broader strategy to leverage the extensive user base of its image and video-sharing platform. This synergy is designed to bolster Meta’s competitive edge against platforms like X, TikTok, and Reddit, particularly in the pursuit of digital advertising revenue.

Launched in 2023 as a direct competitor to X, formerly known as Twitter, Threads quickly gained traction, amassing over 350 million monthly active users. Despite this impressive growth, Meta has tempered expectations regarding Threads’ financial impact, indicating that it does not foresee the app becoming a “meaningful driver” of revenue growth by 2025.

Future Growth Projections

According to research firm eMarketer, Threads is projected to experience a 17.5 percent increase in U.S. monthly active users, reaching 60.5 million by next year. This growth is expected to surpass X, which is anticipated to see a decline of 14.4 percent, resulting in a user base of approximately 50 million.

The current landscape of social media is heavily influenced by U.S. trade restrictions and the emergence of AI-powered ad targeting, prompting platforms to enhance their features and user experiences. As competition intensifies, Meta’s latest initiatives reflect a commitment to innovation and adaptation in a rapidly evolving market.
