Gemini app update adds Android homescreen widget

In a significant update, the Gemini app has begun rolling out a new feature that introduces an Android homescreen widget, enhancing user accessibility and functionality. This update follows the announcement made last week and is now widely available to users.

The widget, while singular in its offering, boasts impressive versatility. It is highly resizable and incorporates Dynamic Color, allowing it to blend seamlessly with various home screen aesthetics. The primary layout resembles the recently revamped widgets of Google Keep and Drive, presenting a sleek and modern appearance.

On the left side of the widget, a sparkle icon nestled within a pill-shaped container serves as a gateway to the Gemini app, launching both the application and the keyboard with a simple tap. The remaining buttons are elegantly arranged within a rounded rectangle, with the Gemini Live shortcut positioned as the next most prominent feature.

Users can expand the widget to access additional functionalities, including a speech-to-text option and a button to activate the Gemini camera. When fully extended to a 5×1 bar, the widget also opens the system file picker and gallery, streamlining the user experience.

For those who prefer a different layout, the widget offers a search bar and a grid displaying all six shortcuts. The smallest configuration measures 2×2, while the largest spans 5×3. An intriguing option is the tall 1×3 vertical layout, adding a playful twist to the design choices available.

This new widget is part of the Gemini app version 1.0.751104895, accessible through the Google Play Store. To incorporate it into your homescreen, simply update the app, long-press the Gemini icon, and select Widgets. The feature is compatible with Android 10 and newer versions.
