Google LLC’s Android team has unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at enhancing the connection between mobile developers and their users through the integration of generative artificial intelligence and agentic AI. This announcement was made during the annual Google I/O 2026 developer conference, where the company detailed its plans to transform the app discovery experience in the Google Play store.
The centerpiece of this transformation is a new feature called Ask Play, powered by Gemini. This AI-driven overlay experience allows users to engage in a conversational manner while searching for apps, making the process feel more intuitive and interactive. By leveraging the full context of various app experiences, Ask Play listens to user preferences and guides them through an iterative dialogue to pinpoint exactly what they are looking for. As users increasingly turn to AI chatbots for assistance, this feature aims to provide concise summaries of search results, facilitating informed decisions in a vast and expanding catalog of apps and games.
In addition to enhancing app discovery, Google announced significant updates to its Engage SDK, designed to create seamless content transitions across devices. For instance, if a user watches a show on Google TV and later moves to an Android tablet, they will receive notifications in the Play store suggesting they continue watching the show on their tablet. This feature will be rolled out next month, along with new tablet surfaces such as home screen Collections, and will be available in over 80 different Play markets.
Agentic AI expands across Android development
To empower developers in crafting the next wave of Android applications, Google introduced enhanced capabilities for its command line interface (CLI), now in stable version 1.0. This tool operates at a lower level, utilizing a text interface that aligns closely with the functionality of large language models. As a result, AI agents can communicate directly with the CLI, streamlining the development process and enabling users to integrate their preferred AI coding tools.
Developers can quickly initiate projects using an Android plugin package for Google’s Antigravity coding environment, which now incorporates the Android CLI. This integration equips Antigravity with the necessary tools to execute core mobile app development tasks efficiently. Furthermore, the updated CLI introduces a new android studio command, allowing developers to leverage the contextual capabilities of Android Studio alongside their AI agents, enhancing navigation through complex codebases.
Native Android app creation
In a significant advancement, Google AI Studio, the company’s browser-based prototyping environment powered by Gemini, can now generate high-quality native Android apps in mere minutes. This update brings the capabilities previously available in Android Studio directly into the web-based platform, enabling developers to describe their app requirements and have the AI agent execute tasks in the cloud.
With a Google Play developer account, developers can publish their creations directly from AI Studio for testing purposes. The AI agent will automatically create the app record, package its bundle, and upload it to an internal testing track within the Google Play Developer Console. This streamlined process ensures that apps become available for installation within minutes, with the ability to iterate further within AI Studio.
For those looking to transition beyond the browser, AI Studio offers the flexibility to export projects in ZIP format or directly to GitHub, allowing developers to import their cloud-built applications into various AI coding tools or development environments seamlessly.
